2008 was certainly a 50/50 split in the polls right up to the election. jerseyjack Oct 2012 #4

2000 and 2004 were genuinely close (understatement).

I figured 2008 would be a big win for Obama, and I predict the same for him this time. Romney doesn't appeal to women or much of the middle class, and Republicans just aren't enthusiastic about him. With this country's demographics shifting even more favorably to Obama (e.g. more Latinos), I think Obama will win by a similar margin to 2008, if not more so.

If its not an even split, how can they sell ads to an obvious loser?

proprietary machines.
Since then opinion polls have been thrown at us by the dozens but the exit polls (that actually have always been right on) aren't being used or even examined.
Some states have actually legislated against using exit polls.
This is how the international community (including us) checks for the validity of elections around the world.
Since 2000 Americans are not privy to the exit poll results.
