Shortly after the killing, sources identified two Massachusetts organized crime figures as suspects: Fotios Freddy Geas and Paul J. DeCologero.BOSTON He was one of the most infamous criminals to ever be killed behind bars. And investigators narrowed in on suspects immediately after his shocking slaying in a West Virginia prison.
Yet three years later, no one has been charged in the beating death of murderous Boston crime boss James Whitey Bulger. Questions such as why the well-known FBI informant was put in the troubled lockups general population alongside other New England gangsters instead of more protective housing remain unanswered.
Federal officials will say only that his death remains under investigation. Meanwhile, the lack of answers has only fueled rumors and spurred claims by Bulgers family that the frail 89-year-old was deliberately sent to his death at the penitentiary nicknamed Misery Mountain.
This was really a dereliction of duty, said Joe Rojas, a union representative for the correctional staff at the Florida prison where Bulger was held before being transferred to USP Hazelton in Bruceton Mills, West Virginia. Theres no way he should have been put in that institution."

(7,533 posts)In his podcast former Mafia boss Franzese says the Bureau of Prisons knew exactly what it was doing by putting Bulger in that prison. He was an FBI informant who helped put away Mafia guys, a guy who murdered or had murdered innocent people, and unliked by most everyone it seems. I doubt anyone cares who or why he was killed.

(3,538 posts)What if he could have implicated and brought down more big mob organizations? Then it would seem someone at a very high level helped put him in a situation where he could be dealt with.
I have no tears to shed for Whitey, but that would be some serious corruption at a very high level.

(7,533 posts)It would be corruption but, honestly, who is going to investigate it? Not who should, but who would and why do they care? It may be a coverup, it may be revenge, but everyone hated Bulger and with good reason. I just think it will be one of those things that gets forgotten about.
