1. Very large lawsuit in civil court.
2. Civil rights case from the DOJ.
They arent done with that fucker yet, IMO.
With wrongful death gun cases, you have two cases to win
the criminal and the civil.

(2,484 posts)Spending six-figures to win a civil judgement against someone with no money or property , who can just BK out of it anyway, is a losing strategy.
But I understand the instinct.

(10,435 posts)substantial judgement far beyond the ability of the murderer & family to pay, can that be considered a debt that they will have to pay on into the future?

He was barely paid above minimum wage, so he gave up on the idea of ever driving again.
With his income, minus the cost of necessities like food, it would probably take about 100 years for him to pay what the judge assessed against him.
Edit: I think what Rittenhouse did was worse than my former co-worker, who didn't even kill anyone with his car. Not to mention it was an accident (when he wasn't impaired), whereas someone carrying a high-powered rifle to a protest makes killing someone with it not so much an accident!

(29,223 posts)and I suspect there will be a civil judgement against the police for not, at the very least, telling Kyle to leave the area.

(90 posts)and you can't get blood out of turnip, so the victim/survivors can sue all they want, but won't get much of anything. Except maybe his AR.

(4,616 posts)He was a minor at the time of the murders. His parents are responsible for him. One could take everything his parents own or ever hope to own.

(3,630 posts)Rodney Peairs, who shot Japanese exchange student Yoshihiro Hattori, was acquitted of murder because of Louisiana's "stand your ground" laws but the family of his victim sued him in civil court and won a judgement that deprived him of his house. He also lost his job. The significance to Hattori's family wasn't getting the money, but punishing him for the murder.

(3,630 posts)As a hero to the reich wingers they will undoubtably stuff his GoFundMe coffers. A suit would be a nice counter to that. You are right about the DOJ though, his victims were not members of a specifically protected class so the civil rights laws don't apply. And the same "retreating" angle that saved him here will probably make a hate crime prosecution unattractive too.

(32,077 posts)The DOJ will not file a case.
Civil suits will go nowhere with a not guilty verdict. For those who bring up the OJ example there are two glaring differences. OJ had a ton of money. Also most people believed OJ was guilty. That is not the case here. The same peer of people that found R not guilty would make up a jury in a civil case.

(43,198 posts)I think civil rights would be a nebulous terrain for DOJ in this particular case.
But I do forsee a wrongful death suit against Rittenhouse. He might not have assets now, but they'll be fundraising heavily on him going forward.
