The US is so regionalized that it may have been a different verdict in another state. Part of our problem is
that the states are excessively autonomous due to baked-in constitutional compromises made to slaveholding states.
Some folks like this "local control..." but it leads to very uneven quality and outcomes
in education etc. No way to fix it short of constitutional amendment - so it ain't going to happen - and the
rich like it this way because they can arbitrage services between states to their advantage. It really is "Just a
Gaddamned piece of paper" as Bush is alleged to have said.
