Ruling damages case alleging 'woke' climate at Academy of the Holy Names

A judge cited First Amendment concerns in dismissing the lawsuit’s 14 counts.

TAMPA — A Hillsborough County circuit judge has dismissed all counts in a lawsuit that accused Academy of the Holy Names of abandoning Catholic principles and being too “woke.”

Judge Paul Huey, according to both parties in the suit, issued a verbal ruling citing concerns that the First Amendment prevented the court from delving into church teachings.

While the prominent Tampa school on Bayshore Boulevard was encouraged by the ruling, plaintiffs Anthony and Barbara Scarpo said the case is not over. The judge told them they could reword two of the 14 counts tossed out, Anthony Scarpo said in an interview.

“This is not a spiking of the football in the end zone,” he said. “The judge dismissed it because he’s not allowed to decide what is and isn’t Catholic.”

This was quite a stupid lawsuit. The parental couple pledged over $1M to the school their daughters attended, and were suing to get their money back because they were upset that the school was teaching about social justice and other "woke" themed subjects.

still care about social justice. Some elements of the Catholic Church do too but they’re getting beat by the right wingers who are starting to dominate the church.

Extreme maga material. She had an unfortunate incident when she was young when she was attacked by a black man. She transferred her fears to embrace all black people. Doesn’t even like Oprah for giving Meagan markle a venue for reporting the alienation from the Royal family based on her skin color. Apparently the royal family is a traditional institution. And the old mum is in her nineties! The stress they had to endure!! I am close to confessing to her that what Meagan felt, was what I went through in the nineties because of her and other relatives in the family. I didn’t even know my husband's family was racist until the days before our wedding when he said his family asked if I could pair my black bridesmaid with anyone else but his family members, because of the pictures. I couldn’t even criticize him, because my Latin American mother was just as bad. They say that a wedding day should be a bride’s day. I had to go through a lot of denial just to get through the day.

There are racists among my family members, albeit a minority.

If I had received a request like that on my wedding day, there would have been
a big bunch of "Fuck You" flying directly in the faces of those making the request.

I sincerely believed we would be seeing very little of both families. For the most part, that's how it worked out.

Back then, it felt like racism was a generational thing. There is almost fifteen years between my husband and his next sibling. Most of us thought the "old guys" would just die off and we would be rid of this racist business. How wrong we all were.

And I assume that my husband wouldn't speak up against his family members, anymore than I could kiss off my own mother. Distance seemed to alleviate the problem for both of us.

It really got bad in the nineties when the right-wing hate screed began to surface. I eventually broke from the family gatherings. And, eventually, my husband did as well. We are only now regrouping, because his eldest brother died. Time is running out for all of us. We are better at staying away from the kind of conversations that would set me off.

The suit is asking for it back because they have buyer's remorse. They aren't just randos suing the school out of the blue because they don't like it.

They are idiots. They assumed a school would echo their religious and social beliefs because of a label, pledged a bunch of money to it undoubtably to buy influence since they were sending their kids there, then got butthurt when the school did not in fact echo their religious and social beliefs to an acceptable fidelity. They are most definitely not randos. They sunk a lot of money into something they didn't research and now they want it back because they feel betrayed, but that's not how the donation biz works. Caveat emptor and all that.

The judged dismissed all the counts, and said they could "reword" two of the fourteen. Yes, it sounds quite damaging to your case when your entire case is thrown out of court by the judge.

It's like when you donate perfectly good money to some politician and then instead of voting for your interests they vote to benefit those dirty long-toenail regular people who didn't even go to an Ivy much less belong to one of the right families. And then they voted to raise your taxes! You just can't trust the people you bought to do what you want them to do any more.

The title of her junior religion class was literally Social Justice. And boy did they talk about it. The kids may have come from homes of very different political persuasions, but they discussed everything from poverty to civil rights to, believe it or not, LBGTQ rights...and this was in the mid-90s. In east Tennessee.

AHN runs an all-girls high school that prides itself on its Catholic curriculum and boasts alumnae such as former White House press secretary Kayleigh McEnany, who declined a request for comment.
