I sensed it early - when he started giving orders to corporations.

(1,364 posts)in the New York Times, The Daily News, The New York Post and New York News Day, falsely claiming that 5 underaged black boys raped a white women. This claim was a lie and cost the city of New York taxpayer's 41 million dollars in damages and millions of taxpayer's dollars paid to prisons (probably corporate owned). Did you know some corporate prisons are traded on the stock exchange?

(25,816 posts)I had never seen the Apprentice and didn't know his history.
Then when he became a candidate, came down the escalator and said his BS about our
southern neighbors, I saw his nature. That solidified my distain. It got much worse than
distain pretty quickly.

(8,361 posts)So he reached that later after he lost. BUT, scholars have described everything he did leading up to the insurrection as profoundly disturbing. The Muslim ban, right out of the gate, remember that? But they say that was not enough.
I'm not a scholar, far from it. For me, he set the tone for what was to come when he said he could shoot someone and his base would not care. Why would someone brag about such a thing unless they planned to use that power?

(488 posts)I never looked at or certainly didn't read supermarket rags like Enquire.
I saw him roll down this elevator and announce his Pres. run. I thought it was a joke, or some TV show promo.
Then he started rolling through the debates with BS.
Had no idea so many people could possibly support such a dunce.
I followed David Corn as he wrote his book "Russian Roulette" which researched Trump and co. from 1987 forward.
Extremely informative book on who this Trump clown is.
Should be required reading in High Schools and College.

(15,267 posts)...tendencies specifically came out in his campaign speeches for the 2016 election. "I alone can fix it" was a key danger signal.
Maybe there were warning signs of fascism in his early failed bid for the Republican nomination, but I don't remember that very well.

(22,913 posts)The former is an ideological bent of mind which unfortunately is not all that rare. The latter requires a singular focus of will and attention to the mechanics of domination; it takes a major ongoing effort that few find worth the effort/risk to undertake.
When Trump first took office I didn't think Trump had it in him to do the work needed to become a true authoritarian "leader." I thought he would settle for the grift and vain trappings of power and adulation he sucked up from his hardcore base. I thought he was too lazy to pull off a systematic consolidation of power on a scale that reached down to the local Republican Party and governatorial apparatus in all 50 states. I got that wrong big time.
I think I finally got how serious Trump was about actually seizing presonal power when I posted this OP here on May 10, 2019:
"Trump isn't "Goading." He is Seizing Power".

It was already clear he was a racist asshole, but from the beginning his campaign events really told the full story of how he intended to reshape the nation on behalf of its stupidest and most violent inhabitants.
