Petty crime is out of control in many parts of the country. Seattle is one of them. I got on a bus this evening and one of the passengers was a blissed-out drug addict. Next to him was a delivery cart crammed full of 'stuff', power strips, cookware, power tools and more. Either he bought a whole lot of things or wheeled the cart out of a store. He had a cordless drill in his hands as he drooped over the aisle. He was in no condition to monitor the stuff. Halfway home a large group of street denizens got on the bus. One of them noticed the droopy addict, looked at the cart and hatched a plan. At the next stop she roused the addict enough to say "Hey, this is your stop, get off!" He jerked upright, and lurched off the bus, leaving his cart unattended. She declared to the other passengers "This stuff is mine!" The driver said, "You can't take that, it's not yours!" I said the same. Her reply? "Fuck you, I'm taking it!" The driver notified his supervisor who met the bus at the next stop. Meanwhile the scene became a feeding-frenzy as the ringleader and her cohorts grabbed everything they could handle and raced off the bus. I asked the supervisor to intervene, and he said, "Its best to just let them go; otherwise, it's likely to get violent." The scenario reminded me of a piranha attack. Half the passengers were saying "Stop, this is not right." While the other half were 'grab-n-go'. Not a cop within earshot, and no one willing or able to prevent the lawlessness. The perps were all races, on the youngish side, and not visibly destitute. Just unconcerned and opportunistic. Made my blood boil....

(13,633 posts)just because the more you steal gets you the lighter punishment at the top, doesn't mean it will work out for desperate people at the bottom.

(29,100 posts)The fact that it's not perfect is not an excuse for "people at the bottom" (or anywhere else) to steal, especially since their victims are likely to be from their own socio-economic class.

(11,845 posts)I have to drive just about every day and live in a city of about 275,000. The folks who ignore the laws - unbelievable, maddening, scary. And cops have given up on it - ever since the first lockdown in March 2020, the roads have been a free-for-all.
