So that tx isn't working for the new variant?
Scary stuff!

(57,073 posts)Apparently, asshat abbott invested heavily in monoclonal antibody trearments. No go with this new variant because the treatment isb't working.

(21,437 posts)on Friday but the 2 brands and models that I trust were out and I don't know yet which alternative to get.
I am looking for one with certified NIOSH approval and 5 layers of non woven material. Preferably with the padded nose clip. It seals bettrr and is more comfortable.
SheltieLover
(57,073 posts)They are NIOSH certified & have a nose clip, but the only padding is the mask material.
They seal well & it is easy to breathe when wearing.
I hope this is helpful info for you.
wnylib
(21,437 posts)but the listing for them on Amazon looks like a knock off. Says it is NIOSH approved but does not give the approval number in the ad and it is not printed on the mask that is pictured. I am going to see if I can get it directly from 3M.
SheltieLover
(57,073 posts)Good idea to buy direct!
Get them quick!
Last year, before covid hit the States, I was watching China. Bought 50 3Ms for $26, shipped.
2 wks later, the same box was sellinng on ebay for $750!

(2,343 posts)As of an hour ago, I know seven people with it. No one in bad condition. 5 of the 7 I know are vaccinated. Not sure of 2 of them. Buckle up! Next few weeks will be interesting.
Last time this year I knew only one person who had it, now I know 6

(1,137 posts)I am not half as scared of getting it, (fully vaxxed) as I am of long haul. I have not heard word one about long haul with omicron.

(29,199 posts)is a "milder" infection in those that were either vaccinated and boosted OR those that have been infected by previous variations of SARS-Cov-2.
Also the early evidence shows this to be a bronchial infection rather than a pneumonia type infection deep in the lungs.
This is the good news...
The bad news is that the R value is so high that infection is all but inevitable and it will be fast to spread... meaning that for the more severe infections (those that are unvaccinated and who never had COVID and some of the rest of us) will likely overwhelm the medical system and many of those people will be deprived of the best life saving medical care... care will be rationed in the next month or three.
Laura PourMeADrink
(42,770 posts)from I believe Canada, probably not peer reviewed yet, said that they believe that lightened severity is not true. They could find no evidence. But it's early so still not enough data.
Time to start preparing to hunker down.
lapfog_1
(29,199 posts)suggests (also likely not peer reviewed) that the milder cases (low numbers of severe hospitalization) is due to the cohort having experienced previous variants of SARS-Cov-2.
On people who are not vaccinated and boosted or who have never been exposed to the virus, the assertion that it will be as severe as Delta is likely true.
Laura PourMeADrink
(42,770 posts)lapfog_1
(29,199 posts)also suggest that those who are vaccinated and boosted are not immune from catching Omicron but are much more likely to have the symptoms of a mild cold (and the symptoms are much more like those of a cold... no more loss of smell and persistent cough).
Yet to be determined about any long term effects of Omicron.

(34,066 posts)"Controlling for vaccine status, age, sex, ethnicity, asymptomatic status, region and specimen date, Omicron was associated with a 5.4-fold higher risk of reinfection compared with Delta," the study, which was dated Dec. 16, added.

So the way Im reading all that is the Omicron variant could very likely cause milder disease than Delta (not to be confused with mild, just mildER) but since its incredibly more contagious well probably still end up stressing out our healthcare workers and filling up ICUs. Especially among those unvaccinated.
Its way way too early to tell but I work for a hospital and they are seeing less severe disease in those hospitalized. Less need for ventilators. But those hospitalized are by far unvaccinated vs vaccinated.

(29,199 posts)but countered by the incredible rate of infection which will mean a rapid increase in hospitalization and health care rationing. THAT last bit will mean a higher death rate.

(21,437 posts)viral bronchitis. The last time that I had it, I developed an aftermath caused by the viral infection that took 2 years of Prednisone and muscle exercises to recover mobility.
Covid in the bronchial tubes is very bad news for me.

Saw a few maskholes and overhanging noses.
Saw fucking wastes of skin with no mask on today..
And they just had to be in the pharmacy line where I was picking up my meds too.
I hate stupid oppositionally defiant assholes.
Wonder if they'll mask up if a million people every day get infected and many die. Well that's one way to get rid of people who don't wanna get vaxxed and become biological weapons in a human suit.
With omicron infecting a million people a day omicron could kill off these motherfuckers who aren't vaxxed, insisting on running around with no mask, and those dipshit mask dick nosed idiots and fools who wear them on thier goddamn chin or twist it so the mask only covers part of thier disease spewing mouths.

(58,785 posts)and you could do that too, just have them deliver the bags to you. Tell the phone app you're in space 3, black car (or whatever color you're wearing) and wait where the attendant can see you. I haven't tried it, but I'm guessing you wouldn't be the first at your store.
We're too far out for home delivery (https://www.walmart.com/plus/free-unlimited-delivery ) , but for others it's $98 year/$8+ per month or $13/month for as long as needed. $35 minimum order, though. One way to help that would be to place smaller, more frequent orders so one could be placed when some new item was needed. Express delivery is also available from some stores -- within 2 hours; apparently there's an additional fee, but still, when needed? The monthly fee also includes free shipping on the items Walmart itself ships, with no minimum. Medications also ship free.
All ways to cut way back on incursions into a highly contagious environment for a while.

(21,321 posts)plenty of them, made in the USA. Get vaxxed, wear masks, social distance, wash your hands, I still have plenty of sanitizer, and chill.
As the Buddhists say, this too will pass. (eventually)
Seriously, this Omicron being so contagious I have gone to wearing the best masks, they aren't that expensive if you get them right now.
Laura PourMeADrink
(42,770 posts)I saw some in a store maybe 3 or 4 days ago. Hoping to still get some in person maybe. In Connecticut.

(51,588 posts)They are the real deal too. I got 5 almost 2 years ago when this started. My sister ordered a bunch before the shelves were emptied and the first lock down started. I recycled them for almost 2 years but since I don't go out much they have maintained a good shelf life. I am giving them out as Xmas gifts to my immediate family and keeping 8 for myself.
Laura PourMeADrink
(42,770 posts)of course offers best protection. But second to that was a cloth mask close to your skin with a surgical mask over that. Only because they thought n 95s were very uncomfortable. Just an opinion

(51,588 posts)tight fit is a sign that they are doing the trick. The straps haven't worn out at all. The tighter the better is my motto and these things are TIGHT. I read the Twitter posts from a NYC bartender and am preparing for the onslaught of germs.

(21,321 posts)but he said that N-95's are actually easier to breathe with. There is so much information out there, CDC or WHO or someone needs to figure this out and let everyone know, not like Trump did lying about it.
SheltieLover
(57,073 posts)Never have trouble breathing in them.
csziggy
(34,136 posts)I find them MUCH easier to breath in than the cloth masks I had been using. The cloth masks tend to collapse in close to my nose. The KN95 masks are stiff enough that they stay out, giving an air space in front of my nostrils. There may be basically the same air exchange, but psychologically I feel as though I can breath easier with that small air space.

(26,619 posts)up here in trumpland around 25%. I was in our little market and saw a local I know buying cold meds. She's a big trumper/antivaxxer and there she stood in front of the cashier, no mask.. I'd bet $20 she's got it.It's really spreading up here. Pretty sure we'll all get it.
Wonder how long I have to wait for another booster?
Laura PourMeADrink
(42,770 posts)Website to make an appointment for a booster and that was an option to get an "extra dose". Not sure what that meant but the choices were first vaccines, second vaccines, booster and extra dose
Glad we inserted profit into it. Odd to say cvs loves making money so they will vaccinate anyone!

(29,674 posts)Is for the immunocompromised. Some pharmacies set it up before they opened up boosters for everyone.

(1,654 posts)When they told us back in June that after the second dose we could take our masks off, I just knew there were millions of ones whether politically motivated or influenced by whatever else who would lie so they could be accepted in normal society without their masks - and with the variants they are doing the same thing. They are prolonging this further, contributing to additional variants and royally pissing me off.
gab13by13
(21,321 posts)but the protection may wane in 3 months. They still need to learn more about this mutation.
gab13by13
(21,321 posts)it will have to get really bad for that to happen here. We have judges who stopped president Biden's vaccine mandates, we have governor's who banned mandatory mask wearing.
