Captive missionaries in Haiti found freedom last week by making a daring overnight escape, eluding their kidnappers and walking for miles over difficult, moonlit terrain with an infant and other children in tow, according to the agency they work for, officials said Monday.
The group of 12 navigated by stars to reach safety after a two-month kidnapping ordeal, officials with the Christian Aid Ministries, the Ohio-based agency that the captive missionaries work for, said Monday at a press conference.
The detailed accounting of their journey to safety comes after news Thursday that the missionaries were free.
A total of 17 people from the missionary group 12 adults and five minors were abducted Oct. 16 shortly after visiting an orphanage in Ganthier, in the Croix-des-Bouquets area, where they verified it had received aid from CAM and played with the children, CAM has said. The group included 16 Americans and one Canadian.

(20,695 posts)Missionaries just want converts, period. Okok. Maybe they hand out some food, but without their desperate need to get into fake heaven, they'd be home not giving a damn. How about caring about hungry kids and rotting schools here at home???

(6,396 posts)...the missionaries during Cortes, the Inquisition, etc. At least they are trying and accomplishing something good. If faith gives them that extra motivation, so be it.
And note, these are people who don't go out on a rambo weekend to some trendy tourist area with a mic and speaker and hand out worthless tracts that litter the area. They walk the walk and go to places that are uncomfortable and know it could be dangerous.
Do they want converts? Sure. Is that wrong? It's no more wrong than wanting people that go from R to D. Just because you don't have any belief in an afterlife, doesn't give the right to force it upon anyone. Technically, you are looking for converts of religion to no religion.
As for here at home, wife and I have volunteered a number of times to help the needy...even at churches, synagogues, etc. that are not of our denomination or faith.
