Sometimes I wonder if all the RW crap is just a type of "signaling". Broadcast your views in an attempt to draw in folks who agree with you while simultaneously driving away folks who don't. In the end you wind up keeping your group insulated from others who don't agree with you and maintain cohesion within your group.

A significant number of these folks wind up backing down or changing their mind when their prejudices are confronted. Interaction would need to take place for minds to change. Being repugnant limits those exchanges and preserves the group identity.
