Democrats want to do what they decide is right even if they sometimes make mistakes.
Republicans want to be told what to do and never question whether it is right.

(68,556 posts)criminally for sexual harassment? And yet, the child molesting GOP sex traffickers in Congress are still there. I worry about the Governor's seat in New York. Republicans have won in New York and could again.

(68,556 posts)win. Gov. Hochul has never run a statewide race on her own. New York is not a really blue state...there are plenty of moderates and hard-core GOP types outside of the cities...if our voters don't turn up, a Republican could win. And the race will happen during a midterm when we hold the presidency which makes it even more difficult. I look at Virginia and fear with the right candidate a Republican could win New York next year.

(7,510 posts)Post mortems of unsuccessful programs and subsequent apologies by the side proposing the program are rare in politics. They are normally done by the opposition followed by the blame game.

(31,818 posts)Republican Voters (at least in my community) tend towards Authoritarianism, Otherism, Racial and Religious Prejudice, and Mysogyny (even the women).
Example - in Hunterdon County NJ - we have County Commissioners. The President is selected by her fellow Commissioners. That President - #SeditionSusanSoloway attended the 1/6 Coup Attempt - and was re-elected by Republicans to serve another term. She and her fellow ALL GOP Commissioners snickered and giggled at critical comments about her judgment, and lack of recognition of the American Voters selection of Joe Biden as the POTUS. It's all good in the hood with the Republicans and Trumpers in my county.
But - what was an outrage?
Mayor Betsy Driver - in fear for the status of her marriage with a SCOTUS case (her first lady as well) on her PRIVATE FB page posted "Fuck you if you voted for Trump and fuck you if voted for him again."
I agreed with the sentiment, as do most Sane and Reasonable Non Authoritarian Americans.
However, the GOP in our county were OUTRAGED that she told them a truth. . . A truth about what their neighbors think of them.
One said words - one engaged in a coup attempt.
But the GOP sees nothing wrong with doing what Dear Leader told them to do.
Betsy asked us to make our own decision, but stands by her words.
And Betsy Driver is going to win again . . . and I don't want to hear one fucking word out of the Trump GOP citizens mouths.
They have it coming.

(109 posts)I think Republicans are strongly biased to believe that whatever culture they grew up in is the best. They do constantly say they don't want to be told what to do, but that's only if the idea conflicts with their identity or culture.

(11,736 posts)Democrats/Liberals tend to accept the scientific method or systematic exploration, meaning trial and error methods of dealing with problems. See a problem, collect data, formulate a solution, try it out, make it better. While Liberals do accept that people make choices and are responsible for them, there is also the understanding that systems influence the options available and therefore, not only do people need the skills to make better choices, sometimes the systems need to be changed to distribute choices and opportunities more equitably.
Republicans/Conservatives rely on "tradition" and seen people as fundamentally better or lesser than... this leads to a mindset of "If something is wrong with your life, it isn't because of systemic issues, it is because you are doing something wrong". Society or other systems never need fixing, you just need to do better. Anything that "government" does to change the distribution of options, means that it is messing with the "natural order" and chaos will ensue.
