Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsI finally watched "Don't Look Up" Last night. NYE
It was some of the most magnificent satire I have seen in a very long time.
Very many Easter eggs too.
Also very poignant at times with the flashes of the life on earth.
Be sure to watch to the very end of the credits.
I do not mean satire is not an insult or demeaning.

(13,783 posts)Could you tell me some of the Easter Eggs? I didn't notice a one.... I did some Google research and found out about the 800 number (I wished I had copied it down, as I was curious). And the QRC code.

(18,497 posts)I'm sure calling the 800 number would be great.
I did not write it down but Google says 18005324500

(15,801 posts)Very odd show. Talk about violence in movies and tv shows. Is it any wonder that kids are taking guns and killing people.

Or maybe we can have some adult programming?

(362 posts)Will watch again. My take on it: exposes our current behaviors, both good and bad, in the name of satire.

(32,639 posts)The zingers go by so fast. Of course the story isn't difficult to follow, it sort of hammers us with the heavy satire. But the many characters are so great and they all have what you call "easter eggs" - hilarious one liners that go by quickly. They're both funny and intriguing, but they take a second to process. It's Adam McKay's awesome scriptwriting combined with several actors' smart ad-libbing.
That's why I recommend a 2nd watching to get them all.
Another comment is that I loved Cate Blanchett's character, but it took me several minutes to recognize her. Not sure if it's make-up or heavy botoxing, but she looks quite different in this movie.

(3,518 posts)I have a problem with any comedy, satire or otherwise, that doesn't make me laugh. This movie reminded me of "Mars Attacks". Big names, big message - didn't make me laugh.
Maybe I'm just an old crusty fool. Maybe I've forgotten how to laugh. I enjoyed watching the actors.
But the satire was the "hit you over the head" style, which is fine if it makes you laugh. I just didn't laugh but twice (and those were really chuckles).
Is someone of a certain political ilk really going to watch this and say, "Oh, I get it. I've been duped!" Or are we the audience, being told a truth we already know? Either way, the message has no way of changing people's perspective, if that's the intent. So, we're only left with the goal of making us laugh and enjoy ourselves. I just can't say I thought it was wonderful.
I am sure that many of my DU friends will love this movie. After all, it was written specifically for you! And just having people we like (famous actors) publicly partake in a satire of a desperately important message that gets precious little attention in our media, we get to feel good for a moment. I get that and I'm happy for that. But, if it had been written so that it was truly funny, then "the masses" would really have watched it and laughed together, which is a healing phenomenon that we sorely need. On that point, I think this movie missed the mark.
Happy New Year everyone!

(7,788 posts)Because it wasn't a comedy, at least compared with the typical comedy film. It was a drama. Maybe a "dramedy" or whatever. I'm not any sort of film or theater geek, but it felt like this was self-consciously absurdist fiction. Waiting for Godot etc. Except this one has a very real ending.
alphafemale
(18,497 posts)Or something as grim as Testament.
So the comedy and satire was a good surprise and treat.

(63,221 posts)most people's minds. There is the obvious hatred of the right wingers, but even for those who are not of that tribe, people weren't sure what to make of it, or what the actual message was. Or they were. Or thought they were, but I think the film was brilliant in that it made a lot of people uncomfortable. Most aren't entirely sure why.
Personally, I found it very funny on certain levels and at the same time, profoundly depressing. It pushed a lot of different buttons, not only in me, but I suspect in most people who watched it. I am still thinking about it days later.
On the surface it seemed shallow and obvious, but the more I think about it, the more I doubt that initial impression. I don't know, I'm not a film expert, but I am a human being who reacts to what I see and experience and there was definitely an emotional message there. I guess we all see what we are willing to see.

The woman's obsession with having to buy the snacks... the "story of the week" on the Fox News clone... the brontoroc...
C'mon...lots of funny there.
And does satire really have to be subtle?
One reviewer said that the video had one main idea repeated countless times for 132 minutes.
OK... I can live with that.

(54,378 posts)I thought it was hilarious, and very biting at the same time.
It took me a while to get the cadence of the movies title, but it came to me as the crowd was chanting Dont look up with the president. It was the closest they could get to Lock her up! without actually stealing the line.

It was just a dark comedy mocking everything from the MSM to Gov't to stupid sheeple.
Great stuff.
