New year, same demands: Joe Manchin will consider supporting Biden's agenda if monthly child tax cre

credits get an income limit — or are removed altogether

While Democratic lawmakers were disappointed to end 2021 without passing President Joe Biden's sweeping climate and social-spending package, many of them remained confident that they would get it done in the new year.

But West Virginia Sen. Joe Manchin — the centrist Democrat holding out on the package — doesn't appear to be easing up on his demands.

Axios reported on Sunday that Manchin was open to revisiting negotiations on the Build Back Better agenda if the White House removed the monthly child-tax-credit payments from the package completely or significantly lowered the income cap for eligible families, citing people familiar with the matter.

This is a demand Manchin has long held. The expanded child tax credit would allow parents who earn below a certain income to receive monthly payments of $300 per child under 6 and $250 for a child between 6 and 18 for another year. But the last payment went out in December, and it has yet to be renewed because of Manchin's resistance.

Why should a family with 3 children making 150,000/ year get $900 a month? As someone without kids, I am getting sick of just giving money to people with kids. I already help w/ subsidizing public education, with providing help for families that need food and rental assistance, and health insurance.

But for those of us that are buried under student debt and stalled buying a home and starting a family- we have gotten the shit-end of the stick for the past 20 years.

There is less money in the budget to pay for other things like increased funding for college and universities, or increasing subsidized college loans, which will help reduce college costs.

I know people with kids love this. But, in my experience, those same people are either going to continue voting for Republicans or, if they are Democratic voters, may not show up in elections.

1. People shouldn't get child tax credits now because it might affect college costs in the future;

2. It won't persuade people to vote for Democrats.

How does this impact your life TODAY?

We should roll all entitlements and assistance programs into a universal basic income and we should have a guaranteed living wage tied to inflation and other metrics.

Also we're overpopulated, the last thing we should do is encourage more children. If anything, there should be a credit for saving the world by not having kids.

There's already a cap, and there's plenty of room to negotiate it down.

$400,000 is pretty much everyone with a kid. We are pretty much paying for my MAGAT relatives to take their kids to Disneyworld.

Meanwhile, my rents are skyrocketing and real estate prices continue to remain high in my area.

I agree. I’m not huge on the CTC because of the cost. Once it’s in place it’s going to be impossible to get rid of. They say it’s extended for a year but that’s a pipe dream. I’d favor increasing things like SNAP benefits so the money goes for necessities like food instead of sending out blank checks. I’ve read reports that put the 10 year cost at $1.6 trillion dollars. We can’t afford to give it to people making hundreds of thousands a year.

Then again I’d like to see an end to most tax credits like the mortgage interest deduction too. Special breaks for targeted groups is what has led to the mess we call the tax system.
