This sucks, don't it?? School will be cancelled if union teachers vote to switch to remote learning

Classes in the nation’s third-largest school district will be canceled Wednesday if the teachers union votes to switch to remote learning due to the latest COVID-19 surge, the head of Chicago Public Schools said Tuesday.

Schools CEO Pedro Martinez’s comments come as the district and Chicago Teachers Union are locked in an escalating battle over safety protocols. Students returned to class Monday after a two-week winter break with COVID-19 infections and hospitalizations fueled by the omicron variant at record levels. Voting by union leadership and members was scheduled to end Tuesday evening.

COVID in general? I’m proud of these teachers for doing what so many administrators are refusing to do.

Friday. Then they'd pick up again Monday. If they vote for remote learning. So far we're hearing it'd be through mid January.

8. My question also. I'd prefer my kids be healthy & able to learn remotely than sick or hospitalized

This is a generous & wise decision protecting their students & the families they go home to at the end of the school day.

Kudos for their decision.

3. Does anyone anymore believe school openings are NOT behind the spreading of Covid?

It is clear kids catch it and spread it just like adults. They may not die from it as often but they are spreaders. But let's all send our kids to school to spread it throughout.

We should go back to lock downs and school closings but that won't ever happen. I wonder how many more deadly waves we are going to have?

the numbers skyrocketed over Christmas and schools were closed for two weeks in most places, but that said, having fully open schools while COVID numbers are high is playing with fire.

Kids wear masks and are distanced in school... not so much with family over the holidays.

6. This needs to happen nationally, to require vaxed families.

Wonderful. The teachers shouldn't have to risk serious illness. Not a viable social contract.

7. Hope The Union Votes To Walk, Sir

The school administration has bungled things badly, a great many kids already are being kept home.

The school board will be the one to fold, if the union votes to do what teachers and parents mostly want.

11. When kids are home learning remotely, it means both parents can't go to work

One of the parents needs to bite the bullet and stay home because, kids.

Usually it's Mom, but it depends on the situation. If a parent has to give up a paycheck, it's a problem. If an employer is missing too many workers, it's a problem.

I believe the Union will vote for the switch to remote learning, but there's going to be a backlash.

12. Looks like a higher percentage of staff than students is getting Covid

Cases continue to rise among school staff and students in New Jersey, according to numbers released before schools went on winter break that track infections regardless of where the transmission occurred.

For the week ending Dec. 26, with just 28.8% of schools reporting data (down from 61%), another 7,125 confirmed cases were reported among staff (1,973) and students (5,152).

Since the start of the academic year, there have been 48,690 students and 12,008 school staff members who have contracted COVID-19, though the state has never had more than two-thirds of the school districts reporting data in any week.

The student to teacher ratio is about 12 to 1. I don't think that adding in other staff would get you close to the 4 to 1 of the student cases to staff cases.
