General Discussion
Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsDoes it seem like pieces are slowly moving into place?
Yesterday the Attorney General gave a press conference in which he stated that, "The actions we have taken thus far will not be our last. The Justice Department remains committed to holding all January 6 perpetrators -- at any level -- accountable under law, whether they were present that day, or were otherwise criminally responsible for the assault on our democracy. We will follow the facts wherever they lead."
Then today, on the anniversary of the insurrection, Joe Biden gave a staunch defense of American democracy, and very clearly pointed a finger at the people who want to destroy it. He firmly and repeatedly laid the blame for January 6 where it belongs -- at Donald Trump's feet. It was an unprecedented speech for an unprecedented occasion.
Coming next, we are going to have public hearings from the Select Committee, which will go into great detail about Trump's actions that day.
Does if feel to anyone else like the nation is being slowly prepared for more unprecedented events at this moment in history -- say, for a criminal action to be taken against a former president?
I'm usually fairly pessimistic about this kind of thing, but after Garland and Biden's speeches, and with the Select Committee hearings coming soon, I'm not currently getting the sense that this is going to end with a whimper and some "the best thing we can all do is move on" platitudes.
Right now at least, it seems like the current powers-that-be recognize that this really is a truly dangerous moment that needs to be addressed head on.

(146,288 posts)It is now 2022, and we have mid-term elections. The process of taking back the country has begun in earnest.
Timing is everything.

(26,109 posts)They are all laying the foundation, preparing the listening public for what is to come via the hearings. Notice I said listening public.

(13,895 posts)Mueller was milquetoast...Barr, Mueller's friend, was breathing down his neck and Rosenstein was reining him in, limiting the scope of the investigation..giving him a timetable...and when Barr editorialized the Mueller report, sweeping up Trump's poop, exonerating him of any wrong doing, and Mueller didn't hit the networks with a repudiation of Barr's nothing-to-see hear garbage, it was over...

(12,213 posts)but I think we really needed Mueller to be looked at like a hero at that time.

(16,926 posts)we DID have hope - and were convinced that Mueller was the right man to be leading it all - 'great military background - takes no sides - firm in doing what is right' - and caved like a chihuahua facing a pit bull (yeah, Barr! ).
I STILL believe there would be much to be gained from the original, un-redacted Mueller Report - and I can't believe there has never been stronger demand for that from any Democrats.
But I also believe that we are NOW on the right trail - and justice and action will happen.....

(2,971 posts)And it's happening as it should, piece by piece. If you are going to indict and prosecute a former President, this is the way you would work up to it. You have to lay the groundwork first. This is an unprecedented activity and needs to be handled in the most thoughtful, careful way possible given the current state of affairs.

I would say this: if a multinational crime and corruption ring involving political leaders at the highest levels was about to be disclosed and taken down...this is what it would look like, agree?
Americans - all earthlings! - are dealing with 3 simultaneous fundamental society-shaping events: global pandemic, climate collapse, and spreading autocracy/fascism.
They are going change our lives, and it remains to be seen how we will handle it.

There will be no movie on the DFG that wont include Speaker Pelosi tearing up his last SOU speech and Bidens speech today.

(4,131 posts)It is a dangerous time. Extremists took unprecedented action to attempt to overthrow our duly elected government. Now those elected officials must take unprecedented action to hold the perpetrators accountable.
If we fail to hold those perpetrators to account, Im afraid it will signal that it is open season on American democracy. The next coup attempt could be far more successful.
Lets hope that, as you said, the pieces are falling into place. The time to take action is now.

(827 posts)We have eleven months to tie this to every Republican that had any part, however small, in this attempted coup.
If we had rushed into hearings, indictments and trials, the GOOPers would have had plenty of time to counter everything the Democrats accomplished. New GOOP candidates would emerge, if necessary, with those accused forgotten about.
These new candidates would not be tied to the coup, and the GOOP could claim they as a party learned their lesson. Dont give them room to breathe. Kick them when they are down.

If the committee has already talked to hundreds of people, that gives us plenty of hearings over a period of several months.
