We asked weight loss experts, and people who have lost large amounts of weight themselves, whether its possible to lose 90 pounds in six months simply by eating better and hitting a humble home gym for half an hour five or six times a week. Their response? Absolutely not, almost certainly not, and hahaha.
Thats what Mike Pompeo, who represented Kansas in Congress before going on to become Donald Trumps favorite cabinet member, told the New York Post that he did.
Ive done this for 20 years, and never seen anything like that, said Micah LaCerte, whos considered Kansas Citys top personal trainer. He would have to be on a massive starvation diet, probably taking in no carbs at all. And even then, no way with only a half-hour workout. Ninety in six is unbelievable, especially for his age, unless hes working out for hours every day. The numbers just dont add up. Dude, just be honest. Mike, come on, man.
While it may be theoretically possible, its just not likely without surgery, drugs or other extreme measures, says Al Rose, a longtime New York bodybuilder, trainer and coach. Even as a West Point-trained former soldier, Pompeo is definitely being untruthful claiming that DIY dietary changes and that amount of exercise alone could bring about such a drastic change in that length of time.

(38,427 posts)I 've tried everything to lose weight. Completely changing the diet is the only way to lose it, and keep it off.
In the 1980s I weighed, 215. Now, 160-65. (and been there for 35 years)
&..............IT AIN'T EASY...IF IT WERE EASY..................IT WOULD BE EASY!!

(15,100 posts)The thing is, any time someone in the news accomplishes something like this, it can be very helpful and inspiring to someone who is struggling with a similar challenge.
For him to gaslight about what he did is not a good choice. IMHO.

(16,785 posts)By going back to Weight Watchers to re-earn my Lifetime member benefits in June of 2013. I reached my goal and have been at, slightly above or below. I am currently 12 pounds under goal.
In 2019, after a myriad of tests, it was found I have some allergies and intolerance to Gluten and Lactose. I made the changes.I lost 11.5 pounds in 2021. I stay very active with walking and working out, tracking and planning meals even as I travel. WW is a lifestyle. Not a diet.
For one to lose almost 100 pounds in 6 months, signals other health issues going on. Cancer and Chemo treatments can be responsible for such dramatic weight loss. The stress on the body is evident. Skin does not have the time to firm up. It has taken me 2 years to firm up.
Nor are fad diets that do not stress lifestyle changes, have long lasting effects. Gastric bypass surgery is not an answer either.

(33,144 posts)No extreme diet. I kept my calorie intake to just below my resting metabolism as determined by a medical professional. I added daily long walks for activity. Kept hydrated.
I am considerably younger, of course.
There are better and more relevant controversies to lob at Pompeo. Like why he's such a right-wing lap dog for TFG.

One of his handlers told him he would look more "presidential" if he took off some weight.
Or he's very ill.

(22,037 posts)Pompeo is planning to run for president.
His weight loss is an early step to improve his image. If I'm right, there will be more image-related events for him to try to paint him as a statesman worthy of the presidency. He'll try to burnish his reputation to make him look and sound acceptable to more people. He'll be the "intelligent" alternative to Trump, (or Cruz or MTG, etc.).
He's far more dangerous than Trump. Let's beware.

(32,006 posts)So he is not necessarily lying. The exercise part is besides the point. You don't lose weight by exercising. You lose weight by losing the food you are taking in. Exercise helps keeps your body fit but it does not lead to long term weight loss.

(4,190 posts)And he told me you don't lose weight in the gym you lose it in the kitchen.
fishwax
(29,149 posts)If you're just talking about losing weight, exercise can be beside the point. But there are only so many calories you can cut through a restrictive diet. You still need a certain amount of calories (I think 1500 is the bare minimum recommendation for guys).
When you're talking about losing that much weight that quickly, you're talking about a caloric deficit of more than 1700 calories per day. That's not possible without either (a) a dangerously low caloric intake or (b) more than half an hour of exercise (because unless you are already very physically active or work a physically demanding job, a half hour workout per day isn't likely to push you even close to let alone over 3000 calories).

(50,557 posts)Is there a possibility he had COVID and lost all the weight while he was intubated?
Klaralven
(7,510 posts)So to lose a half a pound a day requires a deficit of about 2000 calories. A 300 pound male's basal metabolism is about 2500 calories a day. Exercise and daily activities might boost that to 3000. So a diet of 1000 calories / day might do it.
fishwax
(29,149 posts)Usually the recommendation is to keep the deficit at or below 500 calories per day, which will allow you to lose about a pound (3500 calories) per week. More than that can be extremely difficult to sustain over the long term.
I've done bigger deficits than that over the short term, but (a) it was not sustainable over the long term and (b) I was exercising a lot more than half an hour a day.
The average guy Pompeo's age probably won't burn more than 2500-3000 calories a day, even with a 30-minute workout. (30 minutes a day will only burn a couple hundred calories, unless it is extremely intense. Even then it isn't going to be more than a few hundred.) I'm not a doctor, but my understanding is that 1200 calories is bare minimum recommendation for women and 1500 is the bare minimum recommendation for men. Even at that level (and certainly below) you run into side effects that can negatively affect your health.

(7,308 posts)Without weight loss surgery. At the the 6 month mark, it was about 65 pounds. 90 pounds would be difficult, but nit impossible, I think. I was fatter than Pompeo at the start, though.
