By Dan Froomkin
Biden and Harris are trying hard to get Americans to understand how crucial these election bills are.
Meanwhile, our elite media is handicapping so furiously I'm not sure they're hearing a word.

Political reporters have been almost exclusively focused on process and strategy whos up, whos down, whos talking to whom, whos walking back what while including a short paragraph or two about the bills aims, if that.
Obviously, process is hugely important here. Neither bill has a chance unless Biden and Democratic leaders can get their two loose cannons Sens. Joe Manchin and Krysten Sinema lined up and shooting straight.
But the contents of the bills should still be a much bigger part of the coverage. News reporters should be describing the various elements, the reasoning behind them, who opposes them, and why.

(10,219 posts)I noticed how little you get in what's in any of those bills Biden is attempting to get pass Manchin and McConnell.
Media would rather focus on who said what to whom. More like gossip columnists. This way you really don't know what's really happening and business as usual can keep on keeping on.

(21,448 posts)to help save our democracy you are going to have a long wait. Every Democrat in Congress should be seeking out a microphone explaining that the vote is between democracy and autocracy. They don't have to explain all the details of the bills, they need to keep it simple. Mitch McConnell looks for the microphone to defend autocracy, he gets more press coverage than Congressional Democrats.

(7,839 posts)the bill.
Although, if conveniently ignorant of the contents of the proposed democracy enhancing laws, they can feign ignorance and avoid asking any questions to republicans ABOUT the contents of the bills
and permit the spewing of the usual Twitter nonsense they are familiar with. To be later reported on Twitter.
In the defence of many reporters and journalists, they have marching orders from the top brass.

(13,781 posts)In our daily newspaper. I had to participate in a debate on the Kerr-Mills bill and the King-Anderson bill as a senior in high school. I got much of my information from the newspaper.

(25,987 posts)the actual contents are not being reported. Seems like important information that people ought to know about.
