Republican state legislators in Florida are mulling passing
a bill that would force teachers to wear microphones in class so that parents could monitor the lessons they're teaching students. The legislation is being pitched by Florida State Rep. Bob Rommel, who says that he believes that teachers can be monitored constantly without any infringements on privacy.
"I think if we can do it in a safe way to protect the privacy of students and teachers, I think we should do it," Rommel said. "I haven't heard a response good or bad from any teachers, but it's not their private space. It's our children's space, too."
But Broward Teachers Union President Anna Fusco tells CBS that she's worried that people will be discouraged from entering the teaching profession if parents can monitor them at all times and criticize the lessons they're giving.
"You want to play Big Brother every moment?" she asked. "That's not how society should be. We need to get back to where we have trust, we have value, we have faith and we have conversations and we can work things out if something happens."
"If one parent wants it, the camera goes in the room. If the other 10 parents don't want it, they don't have a say," she said. "It can be looked at any time. We don't know how they're going to keep in in record, so they never get that piece out. And also the funding -- there is no funding," Fusco said.
She warns that the proposal could discourage even more people from turning to teaching in Florida.

(12,262 posts)I guess the Latinos are ok with that too. Many Latinos fled their country because of bullshit like this.
Anyone seen the movie "Eyeborgs".

(7,410 posts)At all times in the classroom, it can protect someone like a cop or teacher way more than hurt them. I worked for a company at one time that sold and maintained the camera systems and data storage for large law enforcement agencies. 90% of the cops grew to love the cameras because it quickly wiped out most of the false complaints they used to get.
When parents see video and hear audio of their little sweet angel bullying other students or cussing out the teacher, they will say the cameras and mics are an invasion of privacy then lol.

(24,412 posts)Not being imposed on them by law. At any rate, I think we know that this particular legislation is being pushed for malicious purposes.

(7,410 posts)There will eventually be cameras everywhere, we are already well on our way, especially all government institutions, urban areas and places of business.
Are cameras in school buses mandated by law in some areas? I dont know, but many school buses have cameras nowadays regardless of how the driver feels about it.

(24,412 posts)but I know what you mean. I just am wary of it being pushed by bad actors for seemingly political and/or ideological reasons. There is nothing good coming out of Florida and/or De(ath)Santis.

(3,336 posts)As well, it opens so many avenues to abuse, especially in a school setting with so many children around; though I suspect for the creepy, that may well be a design feature rather than an argument against it.
Now, if Bob Rummel wants to put his money where his mush-mouth is, he can demonstrate the effectiveness of this concept by also wearing a mic and camera during every discussion, meeting, closed-door speech, strategy session, luncheon, dinner, fund-raiser as well as each and every word, movement and deed done in his capacity of representative.
If he believes that's too much, he may be on to something.

(24,412 posts)they are unwilling to provide themselves. Even when transparency is required by law, they still fight about (i.e. Arizona GOP)

(50,949 posts)They get paid crap, their benefits are crap. There is little help for them in dealing with children who have special needs. They could go almost anywhere else and be paid a lot better.
The lot of teachers and school personnel around the country is deteriorating very quickly, but perhaps nowhere as fast and as badly as Florida.
I suspect Florida is about to lose a lot of teachers.
And I suspect that is by design.

(42,331 posts)They also are proposing that parents who object to something in the curriculum will be able to have the teacher develop an entirely different curriculum for their little darling. Which means that a teacher with 30 students per class could be required to have 30 different lesson plans for each class. For high school teachers who have 100+ students each day, that could be 100 different plans.
That said, parents don't come to open houses, skip out on parent-teacher meetings, don't join the PTA. The performance artists who show up to scream at school board members are small in number (and in brains).

(39,343 posts)If only parents could watch, they wont. Most parents don't read weekly emails, how do they think that they'd watch hours of footage each day? This is intimidation of teachers, but don't worry, we're short staffed and teachers are leaving everyday.

(9,893 posts)I can't believe this would even be a consideration. I certainly wouldn't consider teaching if that was happening and I would quit if I were a teacher and this went into effect. I thank god I am 64 and can retire soon. This is the way the working world is going and I don't want any part of it.

(82,849 posts)It's so good, in fact, that we shouldn't waste time bugging teachers, but we should absolutely, 100% have camera crews following around Florida elected officials day and night, making them wear wires 24-7, and let every citizen monitor their daily shenanigans.
In other words, Florida legislators casting about for something useful to do, "You first."

This is a double-edged sword that will come back on the parents and students alike.
The students will reveal themselves as assholes, something that is currently masked because teachers mentioning how fucked up parent's dear little ones are would get yelled at. Now, the whole world can see how fucked up their spawn is and there will be recorded evidence that can be used against the kids.
Teachers won't be as likely to give free passes to students, since they will reveal themselves.
Teachers should make the kids stand up in front of the class and read aloud their names and scores on each test.
Say goodbye to those Ivy schools, unless you're one of the good ones.
