Florida won't enforce federal health care worker vaccine mandate

https://www.tampabay.com/news/health/2022/01/14/florida-wont-enforce-federal-health-care-worker-vaccine-mandate/

TALLAHASSEE — The Supreme Court has ruled. The Biden administration’s vaccine mandate on health care workers will go into effect.

Except Florida won’t do its part to enforce it.

The rule requires employees at federally regulated health care facilities like hospitals and long-term care facilities to be vaccinated. It conflicts with a state law passed in November that limited employers’ ability to mandate vaccines.

If health care companies decide not to abide by the Biden administration’s requirement that 100 percent of workers be vaccinated or qualify for an approved exemption, they risk losing Medicare or Medicaid funding. Both federal programs are major funding sources for health care providers.

I'd not be happy at all if the Fed. Govt. withheld Medicare and Medicaid funds until the fools in Tallahassee comply.

We have this debate all the time, state and local governments are under no obligation to enforce federal laws. This commonly comes up regarding immigration, marijuana, guns, etc. State and local governments simply don’t have to do the federal government’s law enforcement for them unless they voluntarily participate.

All these health care systems are not state run, so it’s up to the companies themselves to comply with the federal law to keep their funding. I imagine if they are fined by the state for firing unvaccinated employees they’ll challenge it in court and work that process separately, probably the cheaper route anyway than losing their Medicare Medicaid funding.

and figure out how to break the fascist right wing strangle hold the republicans have here. It has been a long 25 years since we’ve had a voice in Tallahassee that mattered and we need it more than ever as this state drifts towards authoritarianism.

However, the Federal Government can stop Medicare/Medicaid payments to those facilities that do not comply.

I don’t think the State of Florida is going to step in to keep those facilities open. So good luck.
