Check your local shelters, of course. They can always use your help. If all you can do is bring them a bag of dog food, or volunteer to help out, it's always appreciated. But if you can, please check and see if there's a "Retriever Rescue" organization in your area. I got involved with these folks here in Vegas about 3 months ago, and it's truly the most rewarding thing I've ever done...and I taught at a Title 1 school for 15 years. They save dogs from the South Korean meat markets (they're shutting down the farms where they're raised) and bring them here to the states for adoption. And when you stop and consider what they've come from, the change in these dogs is amazing. Some take longer than others, but they understand kindness and care, and they will respond to it.
If you're here in Vegas, here's their link...https://www.retrieverrescuelv.com/ But please, check locally because I'm sure they're in your area. My sister and I work as transport...we drive to LA, pick them up at the airport, and bring them back to Vegas, but anything you can do is always appreciated.

(3,056 posts)When we pick them up, they're of course scared and confused. Depending on time of day we pick them up, we sometimes spend the night in LA and drive back the next day. It gives them a chance to get out of their kennels, go on walks, and get lots of love and cuddles. Some respond immediately, some take time. But even in that short period of time, the change can be amazing. We of course let them on the beds, and the look in their eyes when they get to experience "soft" for the first time is epic.
Thank you for your generosity and care for these great, great dogs.

(32,080 posts)There are tons wildlife rescues, as well as groups working to protect wildlife and their habitat, like the World Wildlife Federation, the Jane Goodall Foundation, Panthera, and the International Union for the Conservation of Nature. Loads of farm animal sanctuaries, too. Take your pick: https://vegan.com/blog/sanctuaries/
Or, one can donate to the Cleveland Amory Black Beauty Ranch, which gives homes to rescued farm animals, as well as wildlife that was rescued from people who had no business with them, like the India the tiger. The Best Friends Animal Society rescues pets and farm animals.

(3,056 posts)I'm sure our friend Jon Stewart is accepting donations to his sanctuary. There's also "Best Friends" in Utah. They took Michael Vick's dogs when his operation was shut down. They rehabed the ones that could be, and gave the ones that couldn't a safe place to live out their lives.

Many of these groups save retired race horses and "wild" horses, along with just general neglected and abused horses. And, let's not forget Wild Horse Rescue.

(50,269 posts)(P.O. Box 397, Brattleboro, VT 05302), Monadnock Kitty Rescue (P.O. Box 468, Jaffrey, NH 03452), Monadnock Humane Society (101 W. Swanzey Rd., Swanzey, NH 03466) and a charity that provides for old work horses - Draft Gratitude (148 Ashuelot St., Winchester, NH 03470). Almost all of my cats came from the Windham Co. Humane Society. The Jaffrey shelter takes in many ferals. I donate to Draft Gratitude because of a wonderful childhood memory about an old work horse named Nellie. I used to pedal to the farm on my bike and groom Nellie as if she were a Kentucky Derby candidate. Next time I donate I'll do it in Betty's honor.
