WASHINGTON (AP) Voting legislation thats a top priority for Democrats and civil rights leaders seemed headed for defeat as the Senate opened Tuesday, a devastating setback enabled by President Joe Bidens own party as two holdout senators refuse to support rule changes to overcome a Republican filibuster.
The Democratic senators, Kyrsten Sinema of Arizona and Joe Manchin of West Virginia, face strong criticism from Black leaders and civil rights organizations for failing to take on what the critics call the Jim Crow filibuster.
The debate carries echoes of an earlier era when the Senate filibuster was deployed by opponents of civil rights legislation. It comes as Democrats and other voting advocates nationwide warn that Republican-led states are passing laws making it more difficult for Black Americans and others to vote by consolidating polling locations, requiring certain types of identification and ordering other changes.
Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer acknowledged the current bills likely defeat this week. But he said the fight is not over as he heeds advocates call to force all senators to go on record with their positions.

(9,998 posts)I'm sorry, but fight all you want. It's obvious a small portion of Democrats are not going to be able to save this country. The masses will in the end blame the Democrats & Biden, and either stay home, or vote repub.
I already am expecting this, and hope to be proven wrong.

(9,998 posts)I'll vote, no problem there.
Plenty of others won't though. That's why we're going to lose.
Sorry, but I see NOTHING that points to a bright outcome this November.

(9,998 posts)I'm not talking about those of us at DU who know better.
I'm talking about the MORONS in this country who will not be able to distinguish, and those who watch FAUX News.
The swing voter who isn't necessarily interested in voting during a non-Presidential year. Or who are too stupid to understand why nothing is getting done, so they blame the Democrats.
They are who will decide the elections, not people like us on DU who understand, and support the Democrats, with the realization their hands are tied.
