Chamath Palihapitiya, a billionaire Silicon Valley venture capitalist and part-owner of the Golden State Warriors, attempted to backtrack from recent comments he made that nobody cares, including himself, about the ongoing Uyghur genocide in China.
The subject came up on Palihapitiya's All-In Podcast, when co-host Jason Calacanis praised President Joe Bidens condemnation of the human rights abuses inflicted by the Chinese government, including genocide and forced labor in the northwest region of Xinjiang. In December, Biden signed legislation banning imports from the region.
Just before the 15-minute mark of the podcast, Palihapitiya interrupted Calacanis and said, Nobody cares about whats happening to the Uyghurs, OK? You bring it up because you really care. And I think thats nice that you care. The rest of us dont care.
When Calacanis responded by asking Palihapitiya if he personally doesnt care, Palihapitiya continued: Im telling you a very hard ugly truth, OK? Of all the things I care about, yes, it is below my line.
Palihapitiya repeated that the genocide was below his line, and went on to say that he instead cares about such issues as Americas supply-chain problems, climate change and the potential harm to the United States economy if China were to invade Taiwan.

(21,565 posts)I wonder what % of the American public knows who the Uyghurs are. And of that % who know, where does their genocide rank on issues they want the government to resolve? In comparison to inflation, Covid, voting rights. Etc.
Nobody cares is a poor choice of words but this isnt a priority for people is certainly true.

(47,430 posts)he serves as a mirror for most Americans. Still it was a cruel, insensitive thing to say. Clearly he has no filter whatsoever and in the process he received a lot of unwanted publicity.

Why is it that the people with the most money fear -not having more money- more than those with less money?

(2,272 posts)What does it take to be penalized by the NBA, NFL, and MLB vary greatly -- by skin color, gender, and proximity to the real power in the organization.
White outsider woman (Schott) says despicable things and is forced to sell her MLB granchise.
White insider powerful dudes in Washington and New England do despicable things. One of them is actually videotaped by law enforcement with sex trafficked workers in a massage parlor and has his charges dropped and nothing happens to the team. The Washington team engaged in decades of hostile work environment sexual and racial harassment and a non-employee (announcer at the time) coach of a nother team is fired. But no one inside the organization faces real scrutiny or release of the emails, (NFL)
NBA -- owner of Kings says despicable racist things and is forced t sell his team. Of course, the Kings always suck and people hate the guy.
What will the NBA do with this little known part owner of one of the most popular frnachises?

(1,773 posts)He should be forced to sell his percentage in the Warriors and permanently banned from ever owning another NBA franchise. Of course, NBA would never do that.
The NBA is at the top of the list of slimy, sleazy corporations that have sold their souls for Chinese yuan....and in this case, yuan soaked with the blood of the Uyghurs. The extent to which the NBA is hopelessly compromised by Chinese money, along with their rank moral hypocrisy, was evident last year during the demonstrations in Hong Kong.
Shame on the NBA.
