McConnell tattles on himself just as Chuck Todd did when he talked with @nhannahjones: distinguishing Black people from people, as if the former were so much less normal than the latter that white could go unsaid.

Asked @LeaderMcConnell about concerns voters of color have about voting rights. The concern is misplaced, said McConnell, because if you look at the statistics, African-American voters are voting in just as high a percentage as Americans."

(153,160 posts)that is EXACTLY why repukes are going overboard in efforts to suppress the vote - because POC VOTE and they tend to NOT LIKE FASCISM

(51,129 posts)This is what drives Trumpism, pure, unadulterated racism the #FailedCoupGuyt began exploiting and fomenting as soon as Obama became president.

Why is everyone in this thread accepting what McConnell says as true???
McConnell is LYING when he says African Americans vote at the same rate as (White) Americans. Thanks to existing and past voter suppression laws, overincarceration and felony disenfranchisement, African Americans have never voted at the same rate as White Americans.

(5,722 posts)Republickscum used to bellow that "hyphen-Americans" only divided us, but they never wanted us united to begin with. As Timmy Turtle's already-gooey mind continues to soften with age, his barely-concealed evil breaks the leash more and more often.
Who's the party of racists, Mitch?

(14,307 posts)those old stats are useless now that red states have passed so many new voting restrictions just since the last election.

(51,550 posts)In 2020, 70.9 percent of white voters cast ballots compared with only 58.4 percent of nonwhite voters a disparity that will worsen with new restrictive voting laws. https://www.brennancenter.org/our-work/analysis-opinion/large-racial-turnout-gap-persisted-2020-election

(33,643 posts)It would've been okay if he'd said 'other Americans' or 'Americans on the whole' or similar, right?
But his just saying 'Americans' could be interpreted as 'Americans generally' ... without much of a logical stretch.
I think he IS a racist, but there's an easy 'out' for him if called on to explain it, and it's not unreasonable is all I'm really saying.
Nevilledog
(51,094 posts)This was racist.
Hugh_Lebowski
(33,643 posts)People making this argument are essentially interjecting a word like 'real' ... into the statement.
But it's not actually there.
If he'd said 'Mexican immigrants vote at the same rate as Latinx persons' ... would you argue he MUST be saying that Mexican immigrants are NOT Latinx?
To me it's more a dog-whistle than a blatantly racist statement, because we know what he really meant, but another, non-racist explanation is still fairly plausible.

(51,094 posts)I understand your argument and if this was said by a random person on the street, I could give them the benefit of the doubt. However, it's McConnell, and he gets no such benefit.
