Progressive criticism of Sen. Kyrsten Sinema, D-Ariz., reached new and unprecedented highs this week, following the Arizona senators refusal to vote in favor of changing Senate rules to enact voting rights legislation on Wednesday.
Emilys List a womens rights group that supports female Democratic candidates and was the largest contributor to Sinemas 2018 Senate campaign and abortion rights group NARAL said Thursday they were pulling their support from her. Two groups who were key to helping energize voters for her Senate run in 2018, Living United for Change in Arizona and Stand up America, compared her actions to the likes of staunch segregationist George Wallace. Many Democratic lawmakers have publicly lambasted Sinema, and Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., has suggested that hed support primary challengers against her.
But major LGBTQ advocacy groups which are normally united on advancing a progressive agenda have been divided in their response to the openly bisexual senators actions this week.
Im saddened, Im heartbroken, Im frustrated, said Kierra Johnson, executive director of advocacy group the National LGBTQ Task Force. Senator Sinema was someone that we grew to love and grew to trust and experienced as a champion who walked side by side with us so it feels extra painful to not see her exercise her full power to ensure that queer people and poor people and Black folks have full access to participating in our democracy through the right to vote.

(9,988 posts)She isn't being criticized for anything to do with her orientation, she's being criticized for roadblocking her own party's agenda and for votes that materially harm vulnerable people INCLUDING the LGBT community.
She's a sellout. It happens sometimes and we need to be able to identify them for what they are.
I'm bi, and I know there are an awful lot of better bisexuals out there. She doesn't speak for the community, she's out for herself only.

(24,438 posts)Just like Caitlyn's gender is not the issue. They're both people from marginalized communities whom are useless and just bad people.

(53,989 posts)First, the article isn't very good, or rather the title isn't. Second, the "issue" isn't her sexuality, no one is claiming it is. Third, the point of the article is talking about how the queer community is responding to one of our own. Frankly, I think all of the gay groups are pissed, just because some didn't call her out by name doesn't mean shit. We shall see where this all goes.

(43,535 posts)I do not care about Sinema's sexual orientation, she is a turncoat, and her actions may well devastate the very same LGBTQ folk those two organisations represent.

Turncoat may be too nice but does fit.

(9,120 posts)As a gay man, this is insulting. This idea that we have to or should support someone simply because they're LGBT. I can judge people on their individual merits just fine.
Sinema is acting against the community's interests by empowering Republicans.
To the curb she must go.
