very isolated tiny island seeks someone to run pub - 10 year commitment wanted

?quality=75&auto=webp

English Island Seeks a Landlord-King Who Likes Solitude, Seals and Beer
On Piel Island, winters are wet, travel is limited, and the solitary pub crowns the landlord king or queen under a shower of beer.

“We’re not talking about St. Lucia or the Hawaiian islands,” said John Murphy, a 73-year-old resident of nearby Walney Island, and the guide of walking tours of the area for four decades. “We’re talking about a small and very isolated island in the north of England.”

-------------------

But she said the successful applicant would need to be dedicated to the task. “While there are periods when the pub and the island is bustling with people,” she said, “there will be periods of quiet too — something the successful applicant will need to embrace.” The council is seeking someone who will make a 10-year commitment.
------------------------------------

Mr. Murphy said the job requires someone who, at minimum, doesn’t mind a lot of time alone. He described the winter as “very harsh indeed,” with storms bringing heavy wind and rain. “You are virtually stuck on the island alone.”

And once you’re there, you have only so many ways to leave. When the tide recedes, it’s possible to walk — carefully, if you know the way — across two miles of sand. But when the tide returns, the only transport is a small ferry that Mr. Murphy described as “a rowing boat with a little engine on the back.”

I don't hide my personal distaste for Elon Musk, or my issues with some of his products, but also acknowledge he also does some pretty spiffy stuff. Global proper high-speed Internet is in the latter column.

But at age 73......probably not a good idea to commit to a 10 year gig.

Being "King" would check another item off my 'bucket list' though.

The first thing I'd do as "King" would be to declare war on the U.S.A.

Then I'd sit back and wait to be "defeated" because of the U.S. military might, then reap the billions in foreign aid sure to come my way.

I'm sure the U.S. could use another outpost for military purposes.

But 10 years....... I won't commit to the wine of the month club anymore.

... Peter Sellers from back in the 60s or so ...
... think it was The Mouse That Roared ...
... don't know if you younger DUers would fully appreciate the sarcasm considering the time in history...

... also had to laugh -- see us 'grown ups' are the ones considering the offer...

It's odd, but of all his movies, which are delightfully funny, I like "Being There" the best.

"Chance, the gardener" becoming Chauncey Gardner, and everyone thinking he was such a deep, thoughtful, genius, was a great premise for a movie. Of course in real life he would have been found out quickly, but it was a great device for a movie.

Sellers was such a flawed human being, but he had a great vision for what worked in making great films.

So it's small and very isolated but the pub can be bustling with people. Are there no pubs on the mainland?

I have a brother who's a hermit and an avid beer drinker. He'd be perfect for the job except for he doesn't do "people". He'd be fine as long as he could have the pub to himself.

And for that matter that the new "king" is someone terrific and committed to keeping it special and going.

Just in case we don't manage to get him admitted into the Graybar Hotel......
