With Rep. John Katko out, Republicans have a choice: CNY values or Trumpism? (Editorial Board Opinion)

At this perilous time, we need Katko and Republicans from all levels of government to defend democracy from many members of their own party who promote the lie of a rigged presidential election and downplay the Jan. 6, 2021, U.S. Capitol riot that sought to overturn it through violence.

Hate to break it to you, AMNYEB, but those Republicans in Congress (HoR and Senate) are nowhere to be found unless their last names are Cheney or Kinzinger.

Voters in NY-24 soundly rejected Trump, twice. The three Republican candidates who sought to primary Katko are vocal in their support for the former president. One, Andrew McCarthy, tweeted earlier this month, “End immigration in America.” Such extreme views do not represent us. If Central New York Republicans drift to Trumpism, they will lose this district.

Please do proceed at full speed ahead toward Trumpism CNY Republicans if this will be the outcome. Signed, The sane and reality-based CNY Democrats and Independents who were clued into the extreme anti-Democratic antics of the party of tRump a long time ago.

The editorial board had many differences with Katko but endorsed his candidacy four times because he captured the historically centrist mood of the district and kept his pledge to work with Democrats in this bitterly partisan time.

The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result. Maybe next time try giving your endorsement to the Democratic Party candidate?
