I am *done* with these authoritarian attacks on our hardworking educators, who give so much of themselves, often using their own $ to buy supplies for the children they teach. #teachers #edchat

Abbott, who is running for reelection, has made it a point to target inappropriate content in schools. In November, he directed the Texas Education Agency to develop statewide standards preventing obscene content in Texas public schools. Shortly after he told the agency to investigate criminal activity related to the availability of pornography in public schools, saying the agency should refer to such instances for prosecution to the fullest extent of the law.
Under the Parent Bill of Rights, Abbott said any educator convicted of providing minors with "obscene" content will lose their educational credentials and state licensing, forfeit their retirement benefits and will be placed on a "do not hire" list. The state will also require schools to post the bill online for parents to access.
"Also school districts will be required to provide parents with information and options for charter schools, magnet schools and other public schools as alternatives for their children," Abbott said.
Former U.S. Secretary of Education Bill Bennett, who served under President Ronald Reagan, congratulated Abbott on the bill and reiterated the importance of parents involvement in classroom issues. He said the bill will likely be imitated in other states. "Not every teacher is a parent but every parent is a teacher," Bennett said. "We know that the parents influence on the child is the greatest influence of any adult...We need to restore the priority of the parent to the classroom and to the child's education which is what you are doing."

In 2003, it became publicly known that Bennett - who had spent years preaching about family values and personal responsibility - was a high-stakes gambler who lost millions of dollars in Las Vegas.[20] Criticism increased in the wake of Bennett's publication, The Book of Virtues, a compilation of moral stories about courage, responsibility, friendship and other examples of virtue. Joshua Green of the Washington Monthly said that Bennett failed to denounce gambling because of his own tendency to gamble. Also, Bennett and Empower America, the organization he co-founded and headed at the time, opposed an extension of casino gambling in the United States.[21]
Bennett said that his habit had not put himself or his family in any financial jeopardy. After Bennett's gambling problem became public, he said he did not believe his habit set a good example, that he had "done too much gambling" over the years, and his "gambling days are over". "We are financially solvent," his wife Elayne told USA Today. "All our bills are paid." She added that his gambling days are over. "He's never going again," she said.[22]
Several months later, Bennett qualified his position, saying "So, in this case, the excessive gambling is over." He explained "Since there will be people doing the micrometer on me, I just want to be clear: I do want to be able to bet the Buffalo Bills in the Super Bowl."[23]

(16,926 posts)Bill Bennett - OMG!!!!!!!
One may have hoped that he, along with SO many other outstanding "Republicons," had gone down with the SS REAGAN.
But no, they keep coming back, and coming back, and coming back.....
So here's my question to Bennett and Abbott:
*IF it is important to punish 'teachers' who promote 'inappropriate content' in schools.... AND
*IF 'parents' influence on the child is the greatest influence....
WHAT do you propose when the 'parents' are promoting 'inappropriate content' in their home? Do the CHILDREN get the option of 'alternative' housing?
This is all such "HEADLINE-GRABBING" BULLSHIT! Falls right in line with the CRT teaching (doesn't happen), the 'GAY Agenda' (doesn't exist), and any other batshit-crazy 'bogey-man' thing that they fear and don't want anybody to 'consider' as what possibly might have actually happened in our country or may lead to a student actually developing the ability to THINK!
We have SO much work to do..........

(118,282 posts)the following parents to provide our lessons:
First, we have history, with Agnes' Mom, who will show that bananas prove the bible is true
Then we have physics, with Horst's Mom, who explains how the COVID vaccine makes people magnetic
Next we have music, with Sprocket's Dad, who will demonstrate how to build a potato cannon that could be used for a performance of our national anthem, the 1812 overture
At lunchtime, Amber's Mom will teach the girls how to make peanut butter sandwiches for the boys with a tasty layer of cheetos, pickles, and ketchup
For recess, Sprocket's Mom will show us how to blow up glass bottles with firecrackers
For our health lesson, we will all call 911 on our cellphones and visit the emergency room
