Holocaust graphic novel banned. This is actually a good thing.

https://www.nytimes.com/2022/01/27/us/maus-banned-holocaust-tennessee.html

I can't think of anything that would re-kindle attention to the facts of the holocaust more than this book being talked about in the NYT and, presumably, all over Tennessee and beyond!

It's right up there with McConnell's "but still she persevered!"

1. Actually the GOP ban on books seems to be making my teens and 20 somethings want to order books

3. That is an interesting theory.

The problem is that there are tens of millions of American who see banning the book as a positive thing. Those are the ones who, given the right circumstances, would support or participate in another holocaust. The legislative action shows how far we have regressed as a nation. I don't see anything positive about state politicians supporting such legislation.

You can put a Nazi in a three piece suit, and let him call himself (or herself) a Republican or a patriot, and they are still fucking Nazis.

4. It was apparently banned for "nudity and profanity".

There are way too many parents who are either ashamed about what they did in high school or want to live in a fantasy land where everything was like Leave it to Beaver or Full House.

C'mon. Mice and cats are naturally nude, and I've been on the receiving end of cat profanity before.

6. I hold a class set of 30 of Maus at my middle school

It's a matter of time- one of the teachers is already asking about it. I will say that I feel like it's appropriate for 7-8th grade and up.

"hold a class set of 30" Just curious. What is a "class set?" And is "hold a class" the same as "have a class?"

I have 30 copies of this book that I ordered years ago so that an entire class could read it at the same time with a lesson plan.

WWII is a part of the 7th and 8th grade social studies curriculum.

I don't see a suggestion anywhere that I didn't admire the book and its author.

17. Maus is an an incredibly powerful work.

I treasure my copies of Maus and Maus 2 and reread them periodically to refresh my memory. I think it's great that these books are being used in middle schools. The school in Tennessee that voted to ban it must be full of idiots if they find that book objectionable.

19. I guess Republicans who are banning books have never heard of the internet.

Tell a high school kid you can't read a certain book and they will go and find that book on the internet.

Republicans are idiots.
