My wife "they named the Washington team the Commanders?" She's a fan of

The Handmaids Tale.

The men in charge are called Commanders.

It’s amazing how Team Snyder screwed this up in new and inventive ways.

Commies is already the running joke
About a month ago they released a video of them deliberating - one version didn't blur out a piece of paper with Commanders on it. They also bought the domain name last weekend which, of course, was discovered.

Team Snyder 👍

Lived in the Akron/Cleveland area for almost a decade. Went to Jacobs field many times. Never heard of those statues as the guardians.

They were the first pro team in Cleveland if I remember correctly

That was the real local angle.

Some idiot in marketing wanted to keep the script -- ians at the end of the logo.

Planning to get millions selling whichever "Washington x" domain to match a name they finally picked for the team. A lazy jerk's get rich scheme.
My favorites, Washington RedHawks (a local raptor) or Red Wolves were high on the list. As were Commodores and a few other patriotic type names.

So the Washington NFL team ends up with Commanders. Okay, at least it isn't the "DC FC". (US pro soccer team naming habit joke).

They were the Wayne State University Tartars when I attended back in the day. They figured no one knew what a Tartar was so they changed it to the Warriors. Talk about a generic name. Why not The Winners? Or something equally bland!

Strong work, Snyder, strong work.

Apparently they also included on the new jerseys a patch which notes the three Super bowls the franchise has won. And they got the years wrong.

Other NFL teams with a 3 or more syllable name have widely used nicknames, which are 1-2.
Patriots to Pats. Buccaneers to Bucs. 49ers to Niners.

This article got it wrong too. The logo says 1983 which is two years off.

https://www.sportingnews.com/us/nfl/news/washington-commanders-logo-wrong-super-bowl-years/ymro8jkbas218xgt4cgqxo6a

As many have pointed out, the years aren't correct. Teams that win the Super Bowl don't generally claim the exact year that the Super Bowl takes place. It goes to the team in which the majority of the season is played.

Washington won the Super Bowl in its 1981, 1987 and 1991 seasons. Yet the logo has 1982, 1988 and 1992, which were the years in which the title game took place.

Oversight Committee to Hold Roundtable with Former Washington Football Team Employees on Rampant Workplace Misconduct, Sexual Harassment

Washington D.C. (January 27, 2022)—On Thursday, February 3, 2022 at 10:00 a.m. ET, Rep. Carolyn B. Maloney, Chairwoman of the Committee on Oversight and Reform, and Rep. Raja Krishnamoorthi, Chairman of the Subcommittee on Economic and Consumer Policy, will hold a hybrid roundtable with several former Washington Football Team (WFT) employees to discuss issues of workplace misconduct and the National Football League’s (NFL) failure to take steps to prevent sexual harassment and verbal abuse within the WFT under the leadership of owner Dan Snyder. The roundtable will be an opportunity for Committee Members to hear firsthand accounts of former employees and will inform potential legislative solutions to better protect all workers from harassment and discrimination.

“For more than twenty years, employees of the Washington Football Team were subjected to sexual harassment, verbal abuse, and other misconduct,” said Chairwoman Maloney. “It is becoming increasingly clear that not only did the team fail to protect employees, but the NFL went to great lengths to prevent the truth about this toxic work environment from coming to light. The NFL’s decision to cover up these abuses raises serious questions about its commitment to setting workplace standards that keep employees safe. I commend these victims for their bravery in coming forward to share their stories. No organization is above the law, I am committed to getting to the bottom of these abuses and ensuring that every American—no matter where they work—is safe from workplace harassment and discrimination.”

“We launched this investigation because the NFL has not been transparent about the workplace misconduct issues it uncovered within the WFT,” said Chairman Krishnamoorthi. “These victims are bravely coming forward with their stories, sharing details of despicable abuse in their workplace. The WFT and NFL had a responsibility to protect these employees, and they failed. Our investigation will continue until the perpetrators of sexual harassment are held accountable. No person deserves to be harassed or abused at work, and this Committee will do everything in its power to protect employees at the WFT and beyond.”

which was "The Redskins."

My suggestion was: "The Deadskins." But, Danny apparently didn't like it. I guess it opened the possibilities of names such as "The Foreskins."

I think that Danny will be back within several years in search of a new name. Just in case a cash award may be paid to the person who first suggested the new name, if no other is ahead of me, I suggest:

"The Virginia Turkeys." (Please, let's drop the lie that this team has a real association with WDC.)
