if I want to.
And I want to until I'm satisfied not to.
And I don't want any crap about it if I do.

(16,389 posts)In the beforetimes, I could not grocery shop without having tissues always at the ready. It was worst in aisles that were heavily stocked in scented products, especially the ones with laundry an cleaning products. I would usually sneeze more than once in those aisles, but even outside of them, all those scents permeated the air to the point where my nose ran constantly, the WHOLE time I was in the store. Started wearing masks, and *poof* no tissues necessary!
(Kind of ironic that I can't buy my scent free laundry detergent and fabric softener without being bombarded with scents that make my allergies go into overdrive, but I digress.)

(62 posts)I mean, we're not talking a ski mask here. I knew someone who was immune compromised who always wore a face mask while out and never had any issue at the bank or store.
I would wager it'll be even more acceptable now that it's commonplace for people to wear masks so it won't seem so unusual once things start going back to normal. You might be the minority but people will understand why you're wearing it.

(11,011 posts)I got my jabs and boost as soon as availalble. I wear an N95 the rare times I go out in public. , which I can count on 1 hand for the past month.
But I also dont publicly flaunt that I can break the rules because I have connections.
When the fourth jab is authorized, by all means get it ASAP. But it isnt authorized, so no, I dont think you should get one because you have a connection willing to break the rules for you.

(67,798 posts)I have some medical people in my immediate family. Regarding nurses, They need to be first in line for whatever protection is available to them. Boosters. PPE. Rules and regs. Any damn thing that keeps them safe keeps YOU and me safe. Are you aware of the daily pressure they're under? Are you aware of the risk they take for (relatively) little money and little respect by their employers?
I am happy to see them first in line.
Tomorrow, find a nurse and then him or her. They do what they do because, by their very nature, they care.
AZSkiffyGeek
(11,011 posts)I agree 100% they should be first in line to be vaxxed and boosted.
This is about getting an extra unauthorized shot because they have connections and are willing to disregard the FDA.
Were supposed to trust the science. This is someone who is on the frontline and is willing to break the rules because they can.
There have been posts on here from people who are already lying to get an additional booster just because they found someone willing to give it to them. How is that different from getting a prescription for horse paste, because you have connections.
Maybe a fourth booster will be authorized, then by all means get one right away. But dont get one because you have connections who dont care about the rules, and expect me to praise you.

(6,278 posts)They are now saying that boosters every 4 - 6 months might be needed for those working in high risk settings or those who are at high risk do to age or health status.

(1,779 posts)stop you from wearing one with an actual law. Some states could try, but it could never stand the test of challenging it.
A private business could if they choose to, but I don't see that happening either, not for medical masks.

ForgedCrank
(1,779 posts)of exactly where or anything, but I do remember in the past that some locals were passing ordinances banning mask wearing because of armed masked robbers and some other violent incidents. They were all using them to commit crimes or violence. At the time, it was accepted without backlash due to the need, and the fact that people don't really need a ski mask or gas mask on most days of the year. But I'm sure that wouldn't apply to medical masks if it came down to it.
I don't think anyone has a burr up their butt when people willingly wear them, it's mostly the mandates that cause the push-back. There are a lot of people who just flat don't like being told what to do, no matter what is good for them. The oldsters in my family always called those types "hard headed".

(3,491 posts)Ive seen people wearing masks in public for years. I dont see why anyone would prevent you from doing so. Im quite sure you can wear it in perpetuity. I intend to continue on with the mask on the subway and such forever. I actually like wearing it, particularly in the winter. Its become one of those essentials when going out. Keys, money, phone and mask.
Im sure youll be fine.

(792 posts)Depending on the mask you may have gotten some pushback in businesses that are frequent targets for theft (gun store, pawn shop, bank, etc.).
I think the respect for a face covering at this point is universal. At a minimum it signifies that you're respectfully trying to protect others from what you may have.
And yes for those of us in cold climates, face masks in winter are a way of life (though I'm not sure as to the current scientific consensus on their COVID prevention efficacy).

(7,410 posts)Not just in the US, but also Canada, Europe, etc. Pre-COVID of course, dating back decades or even centuries, some have exemptions for health related reasons and such. Most were with the intent to prevent disguise during crimes, riots, protests, targeted at the KKK hoods, etc.
Doubt anywhere would prosecute for a health related mask now of course. We used to see an occasional story years ago though about someone being ticketed or arrested due to wearing a mask in public due to local ordinances. Some of that was successfully fought on first amendment grounds if I remember the stories right.

I dont think I will ever feel normal walking around a public inside space without one. I will go back to my comfortable cloth masks with the filters inside. Instead of the n95s.
But it was really wonderful not getting 5 colds each of the past winters.
Irish_Dem
(47,028 posts)For some reason I cannot wear the cloth masks. I do best with the blue surgical masks, and can tolerate the N95s.
I cannot breathe with the cloth masks.
And unlike the MAGAs, I didn't stop wearing masks because I cannot wear cloth masks, I kept going until I found a good mask I can wear.
And we all have discomfort with masks and put up with it.

(33,327 posts)We have to be vaccinated to come in to the office, mask at all times. They're hot; my glasses fog up, it's hard to concentrate, and there's no one within 30' of me.
But we follow the state guidelines, and I'm a team player in a county that's 87% fully vaxxed, in a state that's 70% fully vaxxed.
If anyone's trying to convince me this is fun, they're wrong.

(3,469 posts)Once in a while someone else is in the office but they don't sit close to my office. So, most of the time I'm there, I don't wear a mask since no one else is around. I do wear one when going to the restroom and whenever I'm walking through the rest of the building, but in my office I'm mask free. I could not imagine having to wear a mask all day at my desk!
Hang in there....hopefully soon the indoor mask mandate in your area will change!
SickOfTheOnePct
(7,290 posts)I wear one when I have to, such as inside my building when I'm not in my office with the door closed, or at any retail space that mandates them, but otherwise, no thanks.
Mandates or no, people who want to wear one all the time should absolutely do so, but I can't wait until they're no longer mandated at work. Since I work for the federal government, that will be a long time, I'm sure, but still looking forward to it.

(34,069 posts)Back in May/June when the CDC, with a wink and nod, said no one needed to wear masks anymore - I got yelled at because I was wearing my mask walking from my car into work. (It's just easier to wear it than to carry it, stop at the door, dig it out, and don it before I enter). I'm not really expecting it to be any different this time.
(Nor am I expecting the CDC to wait until it is truly reasonable to issue the same stupid directive this time.)

(5,294 posts)I do so for three reasons:
1. I'm not completely sure others around me aren't contagious and I don't want to get Covid from them.
2. I am fairly-sure (but not absolutely so) that I don't have it, and I don't want to give it to others.
3. I do NOT want people to assume I am a Republican.

(67,798 posts)I wear an N95. The kind with a large area over nose and mouth and a good seal. I find it not uncomfortable. I would rather have none, but 3M N95 is the best I have had on so far. And I have been through home meade cloth masks. Then double layer cloth masks, then commercially made cloth, then when supplies started being available, the KN95. I even tried a gaiter. All were uncomfortable, mainly by pulling my ears forward.
The double band N95 is so much easier for longer wear.
When the infection rate is down to 3% or so I will start to think about leaving the mask in the car.
