.@DFRLab's @jaredlholt spoke to @RollingStone about right-wing and anti-vaccine mandate activists' efforts to create a parallel trucker protest to the one ongoing in #Canada. One potential target? #SuperBowlLVI.

Republican Lawmaker Basically Begs Anti-Vaxx Truckers to Blockade the Super Bowl
It's not happening, but anti-vaxxers are trying to inspire an American version of the Canadian trucker convoy protesting mandates in Ottawa

For the past 11 days, hundreds of protestors, many of whom are driving big-rig trucks have occupied Canadas capital city of Ottawa, blocking streets and disrupting the city with raucous demonstrations. These trucker protests, led by the so-called Freedom Convoy now besieging Ottawa, began after the Canadian and U.S. government enacted a rule requiring cross-border truckers to be fully vaccinated in order to get into either of the two countries.
The protests, like massive, heavily polarized movements are wont to do, spiraled into a wider, incoherent demonstration against public health measures as a whole. And now, they may be coming to the U.S.
Analysts watching right-wing chatter on apps like Telegram have recently seen an outpouring of organizing around direct actions similar to Canadas trucker protests, which spread from the Ottawa occupation to large disruptive actions across the country, including at a border crossing to the U.S. in Alberta. In particular, some right wingers seem to be plotting to shut down the Super Bowl this weekend. Trump megafan and Arizona State Senator Wendy Rogers took up that mantle yesterday, giving us this particularly bizarre take:
Wendy Rogers
@WendyRogersAZ
If truckers shut down the Super Bowl it would partially be payback for Colin Kaepernick and the kneeling.

Rogers is a fringe figure, deep in the far right, but there are signs that the trucker protest model is rapidly catching on with more mainstream conservatives. Heres Rand Paul, often one of the main gateways of the idiocy exchange between the far right and GOP mainstream:

"Somebody's gotta stand up. Whether it's putting your semi in the middle of a town and honking the horn, or whatever." -- Rand Paul encourages Canadian trucker-style protests against public health regulations

(14,932 posts)AZ is such a beautiful State
I love 💖 my green trees, green grass and flowers all over parks, lakes, rivers etc as a NYC'r/Mid Atlantic Stater
AND...
I love 💖 the sculptural nature, and colors of the High Desert of Arizona. Heading to the Southwest by bus I met a friend in '79 in Flagstaff. We rented a car, and he drove us from Flagstaff up to visit the Hopi, and Navajo Nations, Canyon De Chelley, traversed a Navajo paved, and unpaved (in the middle) short cut road to Monument Valley (stopping to take photos of Agathla [a volcanoe plug] awesome sight!!!) before arriving where we slept outside overnight, then returned to Flagstaff. He went to Texas, and I continued on to San Fransisco. On my way (south) westward by bus I caught part of brightly lit buttes of getting towards sunset as we rode downward towards Sedona.
Then on the same vacation I returned to take a day tour to The (glorious) 💖 Grand Canyon as well esp once past 3PM bc around noon when our tour bus arrived - looking past the second set of rocks the whole canyon looked like a flat diorama (!!!!!) bathed in (mostly) Atmospheric Blues with the darker bands of rock as violets near purple, lighter blues, and pale violets. I was so shocked at first After 3P the tilted light stated to really bring out the warm side of the color spectrum, and shadows. Swoon! 💖
See, I wax poetic over the High Desert of AZ.
Stay Safe over there. 👍

I found the full size hard bound copy of this in my Art College library ?1971. Dear Life!
I already loved The Grand Canyon from afar by the time I was a ?tween - but I think this book (Glenn Canyon sunk to create Lake Powell) into my subconscious as in 'you must go see The he Southwest!!!!!!!' type thing, and 8 years later I did!
I'll have to look for your photographer (I love the interwebs!💖 ). 👍

(21,901 posts)Inglewood Mayor James Butts said the city has worked with the NFL and stadium officials to limit impacts on surrounding neighborhoods.
"This is the first time the Super Bowl has ever been held in the city of Inglewood, and we are thrilled for the opportunity to feature our beloved city on a global stage," Butts said in a statement.
"We have been laser-focused on making sure this event is a positive experience for residents and stakeholders alike. Hosting a premier event like the Super Bowl is an honor, and one that we are well prepared for. You can be sure that the spirit of Inglewood will be center stage."
City officials noted that many people attending Sunday's game will be traveling to the stadium in shuttles, meaning traffic on Sunday could actually be lighter than it was on game days during the season.

(46 posts)As of Wednesday, the get-in price for Super Bowl LVI stands steady at $4,900, while the average ticket price is $8,772. This all ties into a larger trend of tickets to the Super Bowl being expensive at a historic level.
Super Bowl LVI tickets are, at this point, the most expensive in the history of the game. According to Sportico, tickets at the top VIP suite level were priced at $100,000 on NFL Ticket Exchange as of last weekend, while CBS News reported that tickets on StubHub and Ticketmaster started at $5,000 after fees, with some of the most expensive standing at nearly $50,000 near the Bengals sideline.

(14,494 posts)which is what I've been hoping might happen for a very long time but never dreamed it could be in this form. Trucks participating in protests are not creating revenue and profits.

Funny how me and Rand Paul were on opposite sides of that fence, and we find ourselves squaring off again. The difference was that the air traffic controllers were negotiating for their livelihood, but truckers don't want to wear masks or get vaxxed. i get their point, but....
All Rand Paul and other right wing influencers want is to stall a recovering economy and make Joe Biden look bad.
