I am.
I watched them rob the bank. I wonder, did they do that with intent?
I watched Trump and his band of traitors try to overthrow our election, government, constitution, democracy. I wonder, did they do that with intent?
We are living in dystopian times.

(12,429 posts)AG Garland isn't doing his job just because we don't know the progress of the investigation, as it should be.
No one here has any idea of what's actually going on in the DoJ with regards to the investigation, an investigation like no other in American history, and no one here is entitled to know.

(9,111 posts)How the laws governing the government are written include words like "intent" and "willful." The problem is, intent can be very, very, very difficult to prove. In some cases, you basically need a notarized Bond villain declaration. "Yes, I will take these documents to my home on purpose to do illegal things with them! And no one can stop me, mwahahaha!"
I mean, I'm way oversimplifying. You and I are always told, "Ignorance of the law is no excuse," and we get slapped with whatever punishments. But there have been many figures in government over the years who have been allowed to skate based on, "I had no intention of breaking that statute. I had no idea it was against the law."
Rules for the ruled, etc.
So it can be very difficult to nail someone when the law requires intent in bureaucratic things. Think of it as having no recollection on the witness stand. Even if they're obviously lying, without evidence, who's to say?

(58,785 posts)the basic principles that not just our judicial system is based on but those of almost every other nation on the planet. Today's the current culmination of centuries of advancement of civilization.
Imo, the intent we need to worry about is our own as extremists and barbarians try to destroy that civilization as too principled and advanced to suit them. I don't think that's putting it too strongly. For now, we're it.
Speaking of, occurs to me to wonder if the Taliban has suspended consideration of intent -- or more likely how comprehensively, in criminal law. Things seem pretty simple to them.
