The United Nations Security Council is due to vote on Sunday to call for a rare emergency special session of the 193-member UN General Assembly on Russia's invasion of Ukraine, which would be held on Monday, diplomats said.
The vote by the 15-member council is procedural so none of the five permanent council members - Russia, China, France, Britain, and the United States - can wield their vetoes. The move needs nine votes in favor and is likely to pass, diplomats said.
Only 10 such emergency special sessions of the General Assembly have been convened since 1950.
The request for a session on Ukraine comes after Russia vetoed on Friday a draft UN Security Council resolution that would have deplored Moscow's invasion. China, India, and UAE abstained, while the remaining 11 members voted in favor.

I wonder if such an action is currently in the works.

(6,562 posts)Here you have a guy who is controlling the UN through veto, has invaded a peaceful, neighboring country, has utterly threatened NATO countries with military intervention, has fired upon peaceful shipping, and has killed an unknown number of soldiers and citizens, and for WHAT?? For what?? Now, he apparently is trying to get ahold of another nuclear plant.
I ask you, what more do they need to see? Oh, I understand, all right, as do you, the incremental attempt to stave off Putin and his military, to keep calm and think it through. Nobody wants WW3. The price is a world that will be pushed back to the farming days, if anything is left. So, I get that. But, here is an utter asshole who won't listen, who concealed his true intent, taking up the world's time while he all along intended to make war on his neighbor.
KICK HIM OUT. Make a new rule, if you like rules, and just do it. KICK HIM OUT. You will be helpless in the face of the veto, which is something Putin is counting on. Rule of law is great. I love it. But, sometimes you just have to figure out the loopholes.
He has fired upon noncombatant shipping. That should be enough. He has walked away from the UN in deed, in spirit, and is USING THE UN as a war tool. What is the purpose of the UN?
Are they going to lay down and give Putin everything he wants? Is this what this emergency meeting is all about? Let him negotiate for parts of Ukraine? I say NO. NO to Putin and his friends.
China, India, UAE: fuck you too. You should have considered what it would mean if you did not stand up for Ukraine. China, you want a New World Order? Is this it? You and Putin running the show? I WILL NOT SUBMIT. People far better than YOU have shown me the way.
Do the right thing, UN. Hell, do the wrong thing! Ukraine TOLD YOU that the rules--your rules--stated that someone chairing the assembly could not do so and couldn't veto if their country had a stake in the proceeding. TAKE THE CHAIR AWAY FROM THE AMBASSADOR! And, kick Russia OUT!!!
