Can Putin Recover From This?

The EU Commission announced this afternoon that the European Central Bank will deploy its most powerful financial weapon against Russian aggression. Several hours later, Secretary of State Antony Blinken announced that the Federal Reserve will impose sanctions of its own upon the Russian central bank.

Central-bank sanctions are a weapon so devastating, in fact, that the only question is whether they might do more damage than Western governments might wish. They could potentially bankrupt the entire Russian banking system and push the ruble into worthlessness.

Things won't go back to normal, even when Ukraine gets resolved. The root cause of the problem is Putin and he has to go before sanctions will be relaxed.

I think the wealthy there are going to be fairly pissed off when their yachts and Italian Villas are taken.

Hell, those wealthy Russians in FL are getting antsy- wait til their maids quit when their checks bounce.

What's interesting is that he didn't have to do this. The price of oil is such that he could have made some serious money. He was set for a new agreement with Germany. He was really establishing strong ties with China. He could have pivoted away from Ukraine. But for some reason he was willing to risk it all for an unprovoked invasion. His judgment is really bad. And that is worrisome.

But because he went too far, Europe and the US will never forgive him. And I can't imagine China wants a friend like this.
