I have been in this habit for over 6 months to pull aside complete strangers who have a very patriotic hat on. You know the types, with the American flag, or USA on the brim, or Never Forget 9/11, Support America, or the American Eagle with Gold Braids (I especially like that one). I know you know the type of hat I'm referring to.
Anyway, I tell them that I greatly admire the patriotism displayed on their hat and I offer them $5 if the hat is made in America. I am totally surprised at almost all the people who will take the hat off and let me look inside, in an effort to "earn" that $5.
19 out of 20 times the hat is made in China (so far, I have only lost $10 in 6 months)
Then I say, as I hand the hat back to the owner and put my $5 bill back in my pocket (or hand the $5 to them, in the 2 occasions that they had "made in USA" on the inside), "I find it more patriotic by what it says inside of the hat, than what it says on the outside".
I know, I know, you're surprised that I haven't been punched out yet. So am I.

(8,652 posts)A very clever quote, if I do say so myself.
and coined by an avid DUer (since 2004).
You can use it any time you want, without attribution.
It belongs to DU

(154,021 posts)I bought a straw hat this summer at the farmers market. It was ten bucks, that is not the point. The hat was made in the US (and it fits, I have a hell of a time finding hats that fit)
My baseball hat, that hubby bought me when he was still in the service, the command hat for the boat, made in China... no, not the uniform hat.
I am sad to say that it is my take to fires hat (it is a tad on the smokey side now), but it is nice and confy.
Looking for something like that, which is made in the US.

(8,652 posts)It's the patriotic hats that tick me off.
I spoke at a union meeting in Vermont about buying American. What I suggested is that we start off with trying to convince Americans to buy American made things that signify America, like the flag.
If we buy American flags made in China, WTF, how can we even try to persuade people on items like autos and computers and cell phones.
Let's start with the easy stuff to convince, like patriotic hats, tee-shirts and the flag itself. If we can't convince Americans on that type of merchandise, we have no chance with shoes and socks.
