thanks, ellen. My chances are at 62%. Luckily, we have a gas hot water heater and a gas stove CTyankee Oct 2012 #2
We're at 60% here. We have gas stove and water heater, too, but they still require some electricity Dark n Stormy Knight Oct 2012 #5
The gas hot water heater shouldn't have any electricity. NutmegYankee Oct 2012 #6
That makes sense. I guess I need to get to know my household appliances a little better! Dark n Stormy Knight Oct 2012 #7

I do know that ours is a tankless, purchased about 5 years ago. I can't seem to find the answer by Dark n Stormy Knight Oct 2012 #9
Google seems to tell me that it DOES require electricity because it is "smart" so to speak. winstars Oct 2012 #10
It's in a closet behind a wall of boxes. I'll have to do some spelunking tomorrow. Dark n Stormy Knight Oct 2012 #11
Yeah, that's going to use electricity. I was speaking of the standard 40 gallon gas type. NutmegYankee Oct 2012 #12
We took hot showers during last year's outage and that lasted 4 days. We never ran out but CTyankee Oct 2012 #19
Your gas hot water heater, if standard tank type, will just keep working as normal NutmegYankee Oct 2012 #21
I guess that means I can use my gas oven, right? CTyankee Oct 2012 #18
Depends on the model. Some use a control board for temp. nt NutmegYankee Oct 2012 #20
Maybe because we have city gas so it is underground. CTyankee Oct 2012 #17

NOAA shifted the projected track back north this evening and it's likely to change again, considering the weird track this one is taking.

It's also going to be moving relatively slowly, so the big story will be the rain and snow, much more than the wind.

It opens the valve via a thermopile that generates roughly 0.75 volts as long as the pilot light is lit and heating it. The stove just uses electricity for the oven timer and auto ignition. Use a long lighter/match to light the burner when you turn the knob on for that burner.

No electricity needed, just water supply, gas and of course venting. Not absolutely sure about the new tankless water heaters but I believe its the same deal...

googling, but it's late. So late it's early. Guess I'll have to try again after some sleep.

I got caught up in all the different brands as you might have but it seems that have circuit boards and that has to mean power required. I am not trying to be funny but if there is a power line going to your tankless then...

there are just the two of us. I did have plenty for showers and for hand washing dishes in the sink (we ran the dishwasher right before the storm hit and will do the same this time...).

Mine produced hot water for the whole 7 days I was out too. The other fellow has one of those "on demand" heaters, and most need electricity.

Last year was the same thing: our gas appliances worked with the exception of having to light the burners with a match.

We have a gas clothes dryer, too, but I didn't use it during the outage, since it would mean drying laundry while holding a flashlight...

If so, you'll still have that, as well, provided you have one of those old, corded phones. If not, you can get one dirt-cheap at a second-hand store.

The Western Pocono Mountains are going to get slammed if that ends up being an accurate track. The generator is ready to go and that's about the best we can do. Thanks, Ellen!

Scoots up the coast, then makes a sharp turn to slam Pennsylvania. When I said the Republicans will do anything to suppress the vote, I didn't realize they'd perfected their weather-control technology.

I expect over the next few years this kind mapping will become common. It's too bad the nasty storms have become common as well.
