(3,402 posts)And pronounced differently?
In case anyone wondered about the name change, essentially, Kyiv is the Ukrainian name, Kiev the Russian name. As part of a concerted campaign, Ukraine is gradually eliminating the Russian version of the name. Good for them, I say.

(7,876 posts)Just like "the Northeast" is an area/region of the United States.
And that is exactly why "the Ukraine" is incorrect, because it is a holdover from Soviet times, when the Soviets considered "the Ukraine" an area/region under their possession. It's why people like Putin and other Russians still refer to it as "the Ukraine," because it implies it is simply an area/region that they control rather than the sovereign and independent nation that it is today.

(63,221 posts)I am a native NYer and I lived in NYC for years, and I honestly don't remember how I referred to it. I only went there to the Zoo when I lived there. Oh, and Arthur Avenue for Italian food, but that's it. I think we did call it "the Bronx", but I am not sure.

(111,110 posts)But I do not recall them wanting to be called "The Ukraine" since they became independent from the old Soviet Union.
But I do think most Russians view Ukraine as their "breadbasket" and still a part of Russia.
(Although some of us were still in the habit of calling it that until recently)
