The 80-year-old Sen. Bernie Sanders has not ruled out running for president in 2024, should President Joe Biden not seek re-election.
The Washington Post reported Wednesday that Sanders' 2020 Campaign Manager Faiz Shakir wrote a memo telling allies that the Vermont progressive would consider a third bid for the White House.
'In the event of an open 2024 Democratic presidential primary, Sen. Sanders has not ruled out another run for president, so we advise that you answer any questions about 2024 with that in mind,' Shakir wrote.
The 79-year-old Biden has long said he'll run for re-election - though recent polling showed about one-in-five Americans were doubtful he'd complete his first term.

(9,074 posts)Two bites at the apple is enough. Even if I like his politics, we need to start developing our bench. I want to see more retirements in the next five years, not fewer.

(25,862 posts)It's considered in bad taste here to suggest that some of the Dem party politicians who are 80 or older really ought to consider retiring, but there really is such a thing as too old.
I was a huge supporter of Bernie the first time, and I'm still rather sorry he didn't get the nomination, but his time has come and gone.

(9,959 posts)... he helped both Hillary Clinton and Joe Biden. Hopefully, some older and more progressive candidates will help Joe get the independent wishy-washy "center" voters in 2024.

(65,174 posts)She would just miss being eligible to run for President in 2024 (if Biden decides not to run), but she could run in 2028 or 2032.

(24,122 posts)I remember lookin it up a couple of years ago... so I'm pretty sure she turns 35 a few weeks before the next election.
If Joe doesn't run and Bernie does, it wouldn't be a bad thing if AOC held off running for President and after Bernie gets the nomination, he chooses her to be his VP running mate... indeed, that would be the best of all possible worlds!!

(65,174 posts)Shell be 35 by Inauguration Day 2025. I had 2024 in mind. Sooner is fine with me if the President doesnt run again.

(3,234 posts)Happy to hear that. I do though think Biden will run again. IIRC he already said as much.
I don't give a damn who runs. There's no way in hell a Republican can get in the White House. And that's a very scary thought. The rights of 10s of millions of people are in the balance. Joe Manchin could run & I'd vote for him.

(24 posts)I like Bernie a lot, but he's surrounded himself with quite a few kooks.
And he recently endorsed Nina Turner in ohio, who compared Joe Biden with a pile of feces. I didn't like that move.
Other than that Bernie is not a bad choice.

(1,782 posts)guy again.
It's not his politics that I take issue with, it's just the chaos he keeps causing, especially in the primaries.
If I thought he was a solid win, my views would be different, but we've done this too many times now.
