CNN Plus, the news networks dedicated streaming service, is shutting down before even turning a month old. Chris Licht, the new CEO of CNN, delivered the news to his new team at an all-hands meeting on Thursday, and the service will shut down entirely on April 30th.
Licht congratulated the CNN Plus team in a memo to staff announcing the shutdown and said that the decision is not a reflection of the quality of the talent and content at CNN+, some of which will migrate to CNNs programming or some of the companys other networks. The decision, he said, was about broader strategy. In a complex streaming market, consumers want simplicity and an all-in service, which provides a better experience and more value than stand-alone offerings. Employees will be paid and receive benefits for the next 90 days, he said, and those who dont end up in other roles at the company will get at least six months severance. Andrew Morse, the head of CNN Plus, is leaving the company.

(82,849 posts)And now that it's going away, the only thing I can think to wonder is why some programming genius at CNN thought this was a workable idea: "Hey! I just noticed that kids these days are all talking about streaming services. We should start one here, and see if we can't dominate the youth market. The kids will just love CNN's content!"

(7,869 posts)It means we almost assuredly will be seeing more of Hunt, Wallace, etc. on regular CNN...

(17,066 posts)Talk about vapid, empty both siderism always slightly exonerating the repups. No charisma, absolutely nothing original to say EVER. Didn't CNN pay millions to get her for CNN plus? What a ratings magnet.

I don't even watch regular CNN. Almost everyone who watches CNN does so because it's either included in their cable or it's some kind of airport hostage situation via a Matrix-like prison of endless screens.
Yes, I want to pay more for something that's free in the background.
Well. You can't say they don't think very highly of themselves. That has to be down to ego. Who wants to pay for Brian Stetler and Chris Wallace? Unless there's an Anderson Cooper OnlyFans included, it's a hard pass.

(7,869 posts)The fact that they went through with it and invested all that money in these contributors meant specifically for that platform is absurd.

(1,327 posts)jobs. I am not sorry to see CNN+ go. It was incredibly annoying for the past month to see the site crowded with links to stories that potentially looked interesting to read only to see them all behind a paywall.

I tune into CNN for news. CNN is best in the middle of the night. The anchors read the news without the fluff.
