Youtuber purposely bails out of plane and crashes it in California to film himself parachuting

A YouTuber bailed out of his plane over Los Padres National Forest on purpose, the FAA ruled.
A YouTuber bailed out of his plane over Los Padres National Forest on purpose, the FAA ruled.

The Federal Aviation Administration has found that Trevor Jacob, a daredevil YouTuber who posted a video of himself last year parachuting out of a plane that he claimed had malfunctioned, purposely abandoned the aircraft and allowed it to crash into the Los Padres National Forest in Southern California.

In a letter to Jacob on April 11, the FAA said he had violated federal aviation regulations and operated his single-engine plane in a “careless or reckless manner so as to endanger the life or property of another.”

The agency said it would immediately revoke Jacob’s private pilot certificate, effectively ending his permission to operate any aircraft.

Reached by email Wednesday, Jacob appeared unaware of the FAA’s ruling and replied, “Where’d you get that information?”

If was a plane he personally owned, and he claimed it malfunctioned, he probably cashed in on the insurance, right?

If the plane was rented, the rental company and the rental company's insurer should come after this idiot.

that would apply as well.

Here are some:

(c)Offenses Relating to Structures and Vegetation.—
A person that willfully destroys, mutilates, defaces, injures, or removes any monument, statue, marker, guidepost, or other structure, or that willfully destroys, cuts, breaks, injures, or removes any tree, shrub, or plant within a national military park shall be imprisoned not less than 15 days nor more than one year, fined under this title but not less than $10 for each monument, statue, marker, guidepost, or other structure, tree, shrub, or plant that is destroyed, defaced, injured, cut, or removed, or both.

Whoever unlawfully cuts, or wantonly injures or destroys any tree growing, standing, or being upon any land of the United States which, in pursuance of law, has been reserved or purchased by the United States for any public use, or upon any Indian reservation, or lands belonging to or occupied by any tribe of Indians under the authority of the United States, or any Indian allotment while the title to the same shall be held in trust by the Government, or while the same shall remain inalienable by the allottee without the consent of the United States, shall be fined under this title or imprisoned not more than one year, or both.

Who goes up on a solo flight with multiple cameras focused on you and the door... and just happens to be wearing a parachute (and selfie stick)?

I'm not a pilot. Is opening the "driver's side" door while in flight normal?

According to an FAA letter to Jacob, he also made no attempt to contact air traffic control on the emergency frequency, did not attempt restarting the engine, and did not look for a place to land, "even though there were multiple areas within gliding range in which you could have made a safe landing."

Thank you, FAA, for doing the job expected.
