(24,370 posts)the amount of damage to the world order Trumpy was able to foment in the 4 years he was President is extraordinary.
It will take decades to get past this, IF we survive the next ten.
We are on the verge of WWIII if the free nations of the world aren't extremely careful and stop Putin and his ambitions, so it might not matter much what the fuck happens if all of this shit in Eastern Europe goes bugshit southbound.

(8,543 posts)SANGER: I was just in the Baltic States. They are very concerned obviously about this new Russian activism, they are seeing submarines off their coasts, they are seeing airplanes they havent seen since the Cold War coming, bombers doing test runs. If Russia came over the border into Estonia or Latvia, Lithuania, places that Americans dont think about all that often, would you come to their immediate military aid?
TRUMP: I dont want to tell you what Id do because I dont want Putin to know what Id do. I have a serious chance of becoming president and Im not like Obama, that every time they send some troops into Iraq or anyplace else, he has a news conference to announce it.
SANGER: They are NATO members, and we are treaty-obligated
TRUMP: We have many NATO members that arent paying their bills.
SANGER: Thats true, but we are treaty-obligated under NATO, forget the bills part.
TRUMP: You cant forget the bills. They have an obligation to make payments. Many NATO nations are not making payments, are not making what theyre supposed to make. Thats a big thing. You cant say forget that.
SANGER: My point here is, Can the members of NATO, including the new members in the Baltics, count on the United States to come to their military aid if they were attacked by Russia? And count on us fulfilling our obligations
TRUMP: Have they fulfilled their obligations to us? If they fulfill their obligations to us, the answer is yes.
HABERMAN: And if not?
TRUMP: Well, Im not saying if not. Im saying, right now there are many countries that have not fulfilled their obligations to us.

And I'm still convinced Trump doesn't understand why NATO exists.

(163 posts)My understanding is there are NO "payments" to some NATO entity - it's just how much each NATO country military budgets - for their own defense (and hopefully help other members if needed). The US CHOOSES to maintain a massive military expenditure.
(yes, there are payments for NATO headquarters/etc, but that's not the "payments" tRump is talking about.)

(36,094 posts)Also, Trump didn't refuse to honor the treaty, he said he just put conditions on honoring the treaty.
I hate every damn time he speaks, but as long as people are posting his stuff here, I have to say that while his voters hate that we've overpaid for EU defense for too long, and while he put conditions on his support of NATO countries, we know that this "closed door" bluster is the same as his past bluster about making Mexico pay for 'the wall,' -- we know he wouldn't keep his word to even stay in NATO, nevermind join it to fight Russia.
President Biden's approach is to tell the EU that we'll carry the load, but NATO countries MUST implement stronger sanctions and refuse to buy ANY oil & gas from Russia.
Most Americans see that Biden's is absolutely the best way to keep the alliance strong, and that we should remain in NATO.

(11,738 posts)Each member pledges to spend a certain percentage of their GDP on defense. While it would be good for Europeans to pay more for their defense, I seriously doubt that it would make the United States pay less for ours. Trump sees everything as a transaction and he just wants to believe that HE is getting the better end of the deal. He wants to pull a fast one on everyone. That is how he feels he is winning.

If the US keeps going down this path, and ultimately refuses to support NATO, Western democracy is doomed. Just a matter of time before Europe is under the boot.

the US enough. He also thought it was some kind of trade agreement.
As he himself was, so he saw the world.
I appreciate the OP, and it is important that the public is reminded. The specific incident might not have been reported, but there was more than enough information available to have understood Trump was opposed to NATO. Since Putin opposed NATO, of course Trump would.
If Trump had stolen the election, and remained in power, he'd be sending military aid to Putin today.

Who remembers when tfg honored our few remaining Navaho Code Talkers for their heroism during WW2. And how exactly DID tfg honor these few remaining Native American Warriors? Trump had said ceremony, along with the accompanying awards & metals presented under the dead black-hearted, smirking portrait of a guy who Trump thinks is the greatest POTUS - ever. Jackson is the POS' (also Steve Bannons') HERO. POTUS Jackson who used different tribes of Native Americans against one another, violating treaty after treaty. And in the end, he personally orchestrated, "The Indian Removal Act" infamously known by Indigenous People everywhere as "The Trail of Tears" But much more than tears fell along the trail. Many loved ones both young and old scattered along the way. How clueless does one have to be to conduct A Ceremony honoring the culture of Indigenous People - responsible for the Code Talkers, - under - The portraited gaze of the one President who worked to destroy that same culture. CLUELESS
