He wasn't talking about Articles of Impeachment.
On one of the recent tapes that was released, he mentioned that he had not talked with Donald Trump for a couple of days. That was recorded on January 10th, 2021. That would mean that he met with Trump around the 8th of January, two days after the attack upon our Capitol. He was reporting back to his caucus with all his breaking news.
In my opinion, Trump persuaded him that "this would pass". Just like all the other scandals that had happened in the last four years. Just like his last impeachment Just like the "grab 'em by the privates" remark. Just like all the times he betrayed America. It would all pass in time and Kevin would be the next Speaker of the House. All he needed to do was to stick with Donald.
That is why Kevin McCarthy changed from his opinions immediately after the January 6th attack upon our Capitol and the attempted coup of our government. Trump convinced him that it would all pass in time. People would forget it happened and move on.
Now, here we are, almost 16 months later, and many people have not forgotten. But maybe, there are not enough to matter in the political world. After all, Donald Trump is the front-runner for the White House in 2024. That's the story. No details. No supporting facts. People have forgotten.
McCarthy and the Republicans bet it all on the belief that voters would forget the attack upon our Capitol and Trump would remain their leader, even after his treasonous attack upon our democracy.
They all believed that "this would pass".

(21,360 posts)I heard Chuck Rosenberg say yesterday that there is a school of thought that it would hurt the country to indict a former president.
I wondered if he had inside connections and was priming us for a let down?

(111,103 posts)The political Parties are playing with a time bomb.
There are no simple answers and there is no simple choice. The decision must be made. Do we prosecute a criminal, former President, or do we choose to de-legitimize the US Justice Department? Which carries the heavier penalty?
