(14,909 posts)Eight Times Ron DeSantis "Accidentally" Did Racist Stuff
JERRY IANNELLI
Miami New Times, SEPTEMBER 4, 2018
After enough racism scandals involving a particular political candidate, you'd think everyone might just admit that person is simply racist. Yet a whole lot of people from bad-faith conservative pundits to easily fooled reporters continue offering excuses for Republican gubernatorial candidate Ron DeSantis' infamous statement on Fox News that Andrew Gillum would "monkey... up" Florida.
SNIP
1. He spoke at a Muslim-bashing event alongside Milo Yiannopoulos and Steve Bannon.
SNIP
2. He called New York candidate Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, who is a Puerto Rican woman, "whatever she is."
SNIP
3. He defended a supporter who said "bring back the hanging tree."
SNIP
4. He was moderator of a Facebook group that was a haven for racist memes and was run by lunatics.
SNIP
5. He proudly associated himself with Sebastian Gorka, who has ties to a Hungarian far-right group that collaborated with the Nazis.

(945 posts)...we are in strange times. DeSantis ran against Andrew Gillum, an obviously flawed candidate, who ran a great campaign.
Depending on who the DEMS run (looks like it may be Crist), the DEMS may still have an uphill battle. When DEMS ran against Scott for GOV, because Crist is former gop, many of the posters here had disparaging remarks about him without even offering an optional candidate. This board just didn't like Crist.
Crist is handsome, friendly, and smart. I'm going to be on his campaign in the Florida Panhandle. We know we're up against hate, and much of the hate will be allowed when the racist/cultural dog whistles start blowing. The streets of Florida should be full of protests because of the anti-abortion legislation, but they are not. That is scaring us.
Disney's support could make or break this race.

(47,501 posts)but also all the businesses that rely on Disney to bring tourists to Florida. DeSantis is not good for Florida and not good for business - not a good look for a republican.

(22,133 posts)to attack such an iconic American Icon like this? Millions of kids, despite some folks' misgivings, adore Disney (and so do lots of adults). Look at all of the other states chiming in by the way, to try and entice Disney to their states...I don't blame them.

(11,425 posts)He's meaner, more vindictive. This is the guy that set up his own little police force (gestapo) to observe voting. This guy will be another Mussolini or a Pinochet, locking up and/or killing his perceived enemies (Democrats).

(6,594 posts)Just 0.4%.
COVID has killed almost 74,000 Florida residents & I'll bet the majority of them were DeathSantis supporters.
Between Fried & Crist we should have a shot in the upcoming election.

(32,645 posts)Actually I'd like to see Disney pull up stakes and leave Florida altogether. Take as many full-time employees and their families along to another state. Anywhere - how about Illinois? I don't care where they go, as long as they leave Florida.

(10,193 posts)Creating political chaos in Florida as governor is only reason he enjoys any support from extremist Republicans. If he loses that platform, he's in trouble.

(739 posts)The republicans have figured out how to turn losing, getting arrested, having affairs, saying awful things about women, etc. into a winning cult-level donation generating grift machine.
All they have to say it is
- it was rigged!!
- the commy leftists are ruining America
- my freedumb
- the left is grooming your children
- MAGA
- I'd rather be a Russian than a Dem
. . .and the money and support pours in. Hell, we've all seen it over and over.

(8,334 posts)Trump won the state by over 350,000 votes. The term Democratic SOCIALIST is toxic in the Florida Spanish speaking community. Not only people of Cuban ancestry but many of the other Central American nations fled from socialist revolutionaries. They were often pawns between the US backed governments and the Socialist insurgents.
The republicans figured this out and advertised heavily on Spanish speaking radio stations and kicked the shit out of good democrats in Florida

(644 posts)and both have strong Democratic voters. The election will not add 77,000 new votes but will, perhaps, increase voter turnout for the Dems. DeSantis may also have lost some voters due to the death rate from COVID.

(6,228 posts)this really bites Desantis. I know folks who have moved there within the last couple of years and I just want to ask why? I would never visit there or live there. Sometimes warmth and low taxes (maybe not now) aren't everything.

(35,685 posts)The good news is that a report came out (I think it was ABC News) saying that DeSantis's move against Disney could cause FL property taxes to go up 25%.
The bad news is that when told this by a reporter, a taxpayer responded, "We can't do anything."
You can't vote him out?
