Woman Who Hid from Nazis in Basement as a Girl Dies at 91 While Hiding from Russians, Family Says
AUkrainian woman who successfully hid from Nazis in a basement during the German occupation of Mariupol when she was a girl died, many decades later, while hiding in a basement in the same city, now besieged by invading troops in Russia's ongoing war, her family says.
Vanda Semyonovna Obiedkova was 91 when she died in a frigid basement on April 4, according to Ukraine's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, which said she had begged for water and asked, "Why is this happening?"
"Mama didn't deserve such a death," Obiedkova's daughter Larissa, who was by her side, told Chabad.org.
Larissa and her husband reportedly buried her mother in a seaside park as shelling continued in the city where Obiedkova was born in 1930.
