I've gotten so tired of hearing right-wingers whine about the imaginary immigration "crisis" lately. And not just lately, it's something they trot out literally every time in my LIFETIME that there's been a Democrat in the White House (kinda like, " (Insert Democratic candidate's name) is gonna take yer gunzzzz!!!!!" ). But there's a very easy way to shoot down the talking point AND a way to "steal" the issue and make it ours.
First, when you encounter an immigration concern troll who thinks a billion "illegals" are "streaming across our southern border" (it's always the southern border, never anywhere else, mind you) every day, just counter them with this argument and watch them go silent. Just say, "You know, you're right. Illegal immigration IS a huge problem. And I have a way that we can end illegal immigration TOMORROW. (They'll undoubtedly become very interested at this point). Simply start throwing the people who HIRE undocumented workers in jail. If they can't get jobs here, they'll stop coming." I guarantee that you will either get silence or a begrudging agreement from your RW concern troll. Then you end with this: "But guess who doesn't WANT that. The rich business owners who get rich exploiting the undocumented immigrants--you know, people like Trump--and the politicians they make huge contributions to--you know, people like Trump again." Slam dunk.
Now, here's how we can take this issue away from them and make it our own. Simply get a group of Democratic politicians to sponsor a bill (or a group of Democratic candidates who will pledge to sponsor a bill) doing that very thing: promising to jail the people who HIRE the undocumented and give them jobs. Now look at what you've got. You're going to force Republicans to either AGREE with you (in which case, you just SOLVED, and thereby negated, one of their primary talking points), or to vote AGAINST a bill that would end illegal immigration as we know it. Either way, endless material for campaign ads. No more whining from the rank and file, no more segments on Tucker Carlson, no more breathless Faux News reports about "immigrant caravans." Why the problem will all but disappear like a fart in the wind. And just like that, Republicans won't care about illegal immigration anymore.

(4,911 posts)Actually, I don't support that idea at all.
Most of the caravans coming across the border are coming for the various farm seasons. If it weren't for them, we'd all starve. They should be given essential worker status.

(20,534 posts)if we do go that route, we need to make sure we include those that hire undocumented yard workers and roofers and house cleaners and handymen (handypersons?).
Make sure a LOT of people got skin in the game. Edge your own lawn, you bunch of lazy gimps.

(7,733 posts)immigration bill. The Senate passed it with a strong majority. The bill died in Boehner House.
I think Republicans didnt want to kill a future well of division and donations they could go to often.

(2,403 posts)And here is why. I dont believe in allowing migrants here to farm for what is less than a living wage just so that we can have cheap produce. HOWEVER, we told these stupid fucks (gop voters) that this was going to add to inflation when they wanted to shut down the border completely.
These morons never once played chess a single time in their lives.

(6,676 posts)As a Texan I always say to Republicans whining about Immigration that
IF the Republicans REALLY wanted to fix immigration they could have done it by now.
They have been in charge since 1995 in Texas, after all!
They prance around like it matters but the dirty little truth of it is that they
DONT WANT TO FIX IT.
They really Love the fact they they can hire illegals for cheap and can take advantage of the
Perks that go with employees that are trapped in low wage jobs.
Another truth is that Texas would go under without Mexican labor.
They build the schools, the roads, do almost all farming and skilled outdoor labor.
Dont believe them for a minute when they say they want to fix it.
If they really did they would have done it by now.

(32,100 posts)It was started in 1942 to bring undocumented workers into the U.S. due to the WW 2 labor shortage. Hundreds of thousands of Mexican workers came into the U.S. every year to do temporary labor. It had strong bipartisan support and went on during both Dem and Rep administrations. It ended in 1964 due to opposition from organized labor. We have not had an immigration policy that made sense since then.

(45,579 posts)The news is full of businesses who can't get enough workers for all sorts of jobs everywhere. There's the "great resignation" as good workers leave because they found much better jobs.
Personally I've been stealing jobs my whole life and it's exhausting. I need a break from stealing jobs but recruiters are more desperate these days than ever before to hire one token US citizen for jobs US citizens don't want.
I'd like to go after contracting firms who abuse legal H1B labor. It's completely insane what they get away with completely legally. It's time to update the laws to protect these workers, so that its less profitable to screw them over. That's why they do it. They save money by treating people worse than any American would tolerate. Treating them better would make it more competitive for Americans to apply for these jobs.
It's frustrating that more liberals don't support reforms here. Even some of our dumber DUers will get Trumpy on the race issue. Too many have said that being a US citizen born in the USA doesn't make me any less of an H1B job stealer because my race is Indian.

How is that helping immigrants working here without green cards?

(719 posts)After a background check, let anyone who wants to come r to work legally, come! Every six months check in. After five years apply for legal status. After another five become a citizen.
Win-win. We need workers and people arent having enough babies to support the baby boomers and millennials in retirement.

The intent was to win the argument and make immigration a losing argument for the R's.
Depriving undocumented workers of employment might be an unintended consequence of not thinking this thru, given that was not the stated goal.

(12,881 posts)But I still hesitate to assign intent that was not articulated.
There is no shortage of people who think they have a great idea without actually thinking it through.
I am not asserting the OP had no such intent to deprive undocumented workers of employment, as anything is possible when it comes to such rhetoric.
