Add to that the fact that China and others are underreporting deaths. GoCubsGo Apr 2022 #4
That page also gives the estimate (by The Economist) of excess deaths muriel_volestrangler Apr 2022 #6
We're one of the biggest countries, so that's not surprising. yardwork Apr 2022 #2

Sort by deaths per 1M or Total cases per 1M by clicking on the appropriate column. We are nowhere near number one. Still tragic how many cases and deaths could have been avoided.

Probably massively, in the case of China.

which doesn't depend on Covid reporting (though countries' death statistics vary in comprehensiveness and timeliness too). That doesn't shows China that big - they did, after all, have extreme lockdowns at times. If you click on the 'table' tab, you can sort by Central estimate - absolute change, Mar 2020-Apr 2022, and you get as the highest:
India: 5.88 million
Russia: 1.26 million
USA: 1.19 million
Indonesia: 0.89 million
Pakistan: 0.87 million
Brazil: 0.82 million
Mexico: 0.73 million
Bangladesh: 0.55 million
China: 0.43 million

The uncertainties for India, Indonesia, Pakistan, Bangladesh and China are very wide.

We may have the most deaths,...but looking at more charts, you will see that the numbers are..decreasing in
the United States..and that is very good

It means many people are taking the kind of precautions necessary to protect themselves.
I take precautions always...Why?

........... I have had pneumonia and it is awful. Very, VERY, VERY AWFUL!!! it
almost killed me. I don't want that again.. I always wear a mask in any kind of crowds..even in the food store, or
at any store or place where other people are. Yes.....ANY PLACE!!
