Just out of curiosity ...

If Democrats started acting like the Republicans we see on a daily basis now - e.g. promoting ridiculous conspiracy theories, claiming that dead people are still alive, insisting that vaccinations contain tracking devices, etc. - would you leave the party, maybe register as Independent?

Or would you stay a Democrat in hopes that the out-there members will eventually STFU and come back to reality?

Honestly, I think I would leave rather than be associated with the whack-jobs I'm seeing on the GOP side these days. Putting aside the obvious (racism, homophobia, xenophobia, etc.), the stupidity alone would drive me away.

Due to how vocal the RWNJs are, I now associate being a Republican with being a low-IQ idiot who swallows the most insane CTs, and cannot distinguish between lunacy and the real world.

It also makes me wonder why reality-based Republicans (and I suspect there are still some out there) continue to support a party that has so completely given itself over to nonsense-spouting nut-jobs.

YMMV, but if MY party was being represented on a daily basis by horse-dewormer-ingesting, fact-denying, JFK Jr. is alive and will be Trump's running mate in 2024 lunatics, I would leave that party in a heartbeat.

Your thoughts?

And there wouldn't be a political party in the country that I could join.

But that doesn't mean that I wouldn't like to grab some of our elected officials and mouthpieces by the lapels and shake them hard. Don't ask me what I would like to do with the rethug nutjobs.

a political party if it morphed into what is now the putinesque wing of the repubs.

However, another reason that would for sure seal the deal especially if they were as stupid and totally devoid of humanity as they appear to be.. would be the constant lying and hypocrisy

I am so done.

You are always brilliant at explaining what many of us are thinking but are for some reason not nearly as articulate as you are.

Once again, thank you for posting.

Change happens. You either make the best you can of it or

I've been posting stuff like this, just a summary here.

In denial since the "southern strategy" ... getting on the racism pony because their numbers and influence were and still are, declining.
Same for Evangelical Qristians and even businesses, whose fat asses have had to adjust to revolutionary market and technology changes.

So, they got together to form a cult, and wag the dog with a minority of vocal and treacherous creeps.

Maga is a cult, and cults trap you in ways similar to ways that addiction does.

When you compare the manifestations and mechanisms, they are remarkably similar. (throw in mafia-like behavior)

They have no problem with lies and contradictions as long as the group/addiction are served.

They shut out anything that does not reinforce the group/addiction, and project members' failings onto others.

-------------
In short, they're afraid, sick and would rather blow it all up than let things get more equal, honorable and fair.

Businesses may part company with the "blow it all up" part, but they have NO BALLS AT ALL to break with this arrangement.

Until "numbers" change. In fact, the turmoil has been very very good to them.
-------------

Suggestions:

Just deny them power. Changing hearts and minds is immense.
By holding power, making their threats moot, and undoing their sabotage of institutions is doable.
And as suggested below, you can change the "reachable", through messages and positive actions and results.

You can't de-program in a short time. You can only outnumber them and deny them real power.

I would never join the goddamn republicans no matter what.

I wouldn't declare an affiliation and I would vote for the sanest ones I could vote for that wouldn't offend my moral compass.
