Buckle up - this is the beginning of a lot of potential ugliness.

Roe v. Wade is based on the 'right to privacy.' If the majority opinion by SCOTUS suggests that the constitution does not protect the right to privacy... that affects a WHOLE lot of other decisions. Buckle up - this is the beginning of a lot of potential ugliness.
A thread.

Lawrence v. Texas: Decided in 2003, the court used the Right to Privacy to determine that it's unconstitutional to punish people for committing sodomy. The Roe ruling could open the door for criminalizing homosexuality.

Griswold v. Connecticut: Decided in 1965, this case protects the ability of married couples to buy contraceptives without government restriction. This isn't just about abortion. Next up, contraceptives.

Loving v. Virginia: This 1968 case, which threw out laws banning interracial marriages, was decided based on the right to privacy. If a state wanted to prohibit who people could marry -- there is no protection from that without a right to privacy.

Stanley v Georgia: This 1969 case found that there was a right to privacy around possession pornography. If a state wants to outlaw pornography or certain forms of adult pornography, it could do that without the right to privacy.

Obergefell v. Hodges: The 2015 opinion that legalized same sex marriage used the right to privacy and the equal protection clause to do so. This could open the door for a state to try to test same sex marriage laws.

Meyer v. Nebraska: This 1923 ruling allows families to decide for themselves if they want their children to learn a language other than English. This could open the door for racist states to try to outlaw learning their family's languages.

Skinner v Oklahoma: This 1942 ruling found that it's unconstitutional to forcibly sterilize people. The Roe ruling could open the door for criminals, disabled people or BIPOC folks to be forcibly sterilized.

Emphasis mine

In his book, “It Can’t Happen Here” (1935), Sinclair Lewis wrote, “When fascism comes to America, it will be wrapped in a flag and carrying the cross.”

Dear Quote Investigator: The impulses of nationalism and authoritarianism sometimes combine to produce devastating results. The following saying has been attributed to the prominent writer Sinclair Lewis and the populist politician Huey Long:

When Fascism comes to America, it will be wrapped in the flag.

The phrase “and carrying a cross” is often added to this saying. I have not found any solid citations for Lewis or Long. Would you please explore this topic?

Quote Investigator: QI has located no substantive evidence ascribing this remark to Sinclair Lewis or Huey Long. In addition, the “Sinclair Lewis Society” was unable to find this quotation in the Lewis’s oeuvre.[1] A thematically germane Lewis quotation from 1935 is presented further below. QI has also examined a different, but related, quotation ascribed to Huey Long...

Snopes also says Lewis never said it.
As Time magazine noted on 16 November 2016, It Can’t Happen Here was completely sold out on Amazon.com and Books-A-Million within a week of the 2016 U.S. presidential election. The election’s aftermath also saw the recirculation of a famous quote attributed to Sinclair Lewis, a line often said to have come directly from the novel: “When fascism comes to America it will be wrapped in the flag and carrying a cross.”

Although that statement sounds like a sentiment Lewis would have agreed with, there’s no record of his actually writing or saying it, according to the web site of the Sinclair Lewis Society.

Forced pregnancy is slavery. If they can pretend that anti-abortion laws don't violate the 13th amendment, then they will find other ways to have slavery as well.

First, the comfort some are taking in the fact that some states' leaders are vowing to keep abortion legal in their states will dissipate when it becomes clear that next up is making abortion a federal crime. Possibly with the Texas bounty-hunter angle applied nationwide.

And then, as you say, all of the other horrifying fascist moves the RW is about to make.

That decision basically made slavery legal in all states. It didn't matter if you were a slave and crossed into a non-slave state, you were still a slave (bound by the rules of the slave holding state you came from).

Personally, I don't see how these state rules work in terms of health care if that can be seen as interstate commerce. Similar to state flow control of trash being struct down in the 1980s. Trash was a commodity and therefore not subject to state controls; only the Federal government could regulate interstate commerce.

Will be interesting to see if the Republicans can pass a federal law outlawing abortion. I get into arguments all the time about the majority supporting the right to choose. If that's the case, a federal law restricting abortion should set off a fire storm that sweeps the anti-abortion folks out of office at the federal, state and local levels. I have my doubts on that.

The 2nd Amendment is about the right to keep and bear arms. So, I thought you were talking about “arming” ourselves with weapons.

Many apologies.

I am not advocating violence right yet. But some things are worth fighting for. The right to civil liberties and autonomy over ones body seem like one of the best possible hills to die on for me. It will be time when the time comes. Those days are increasingly looking closer and closer.

John Roberts, if nothing else, is a devout Republican. He will not do anything to hurt Republican election chances before November.

Alito has set this can of worms out in the hot sun for everyone to see and smell before the next election.

I think they may try to temporarily minimize the political damage.

It's difficult to see how this does not hurt the Republicans electorally.
