Second house collapses at Cape Hatteras National Seashore

MANTEO, N.C. — Cape Hatteras National Seashore (Seashore) has confirmed that an unoccupied house at 24265 Ocean Drive, Rodanthe, N.C. collapsed this afternoon. This is the second unoccupied house collapse of the day at the Seashore.

The beach near Ocean Drive is closed and law enforcement officials will close Ocean Drive shortly. Visitors are cautioned to stay away from the beach in this area.

Additional details will be provided via Seashore social media, when available. As photos and videos from near the collapsed house sites are taken, they will be posted to the Seashore’s Flickr page.

Ideally we'd have a political mechanism to remove structures before the sea takes them. hunter May 2022 #2

Big storm off shore off the east coast has been attacking the outer banks, which are, after all, basically sand bars that are barely above sea level. Obvious target for sea level rise.

I would not refer to that house as "unoccupied" ... it was abandoned.

Even at the start of the video the house was clearly in extremely bad condition.

All that trash can't be good for the marine environment.

An aunt and uncle lost their seaside home one year. I have such fond memories of that house growing up. It was built right over the bulkhead, so when the tide came in you had the illusion of being on the water.

It didn’t fall in; it was pushed. The hillside behind was sand. I remember my brother and I used to play behind the house when we were little, digging into the sand. Truly wasn’t our fault though I was married with kids before it went away.

Anyway, everything was lost. There was an old wood burning oven in the kitchen- huge thing! All just… gone. The ocean swallowed it up.

Based on the google satellite pic, those houses were built on sand and wayyyyyyyyyyyyy too close to the water.

Another example of lack of foresight on the part of the planners. Most of these places can't get insurance either because of where they are located.
