General Discussion
Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsI had a very productive morning
Started with second covid booster and flu shot (winter nears) and can categorically say that the flu shot hurts more than covid.
Straight to the local Senior Citz. rooms for early voting in next weekend's Federal Election. Straight Labor Party vote for both House and Senate. I was really surprised by the number of right wing groups that have sprung up.
Pauline Hanson's One Nation (Racist bogans)
Australian Federation Party (Say Covid is mild)
Liberal Democrats (Don't be fooled they have a 'freedom manifesto' and support small gov)
United Australia party (coal, pollution - Freedom!)
Plus the main parties - Liberals (conservatives) Greens - our greens are actually really good and are a great second or third alternative in preferential (ranked choice) voting.
After this, grabbed my dog and picked up a friends two poodles for a lovely low tide beach walk. This is them just watching, as I do calisthenics trying to get the camera into a rock pool.

(17,160 posts)The poodles are brother and sister, aged 10 and belong to a dear friend who can no longer walk them. Gibby, my JRT is two and a half and rarely stands still. Just to get them all in one shot is an accomplishment, standing still is exceptional! This is a shot for the ages.

(24,733 posts)post ‐ thanks!
So what party is the equivalent of Dems in Australia?
canetoad
(17,160 posts)Liberal and Labor are the two main parties.
Some secondary parties can and have risen to prominence at various time. For several decades there has been an alliance between the Liberals and the National Party. In general, it's not as terrible as it sounds. The party was formed to represent farmers, landholders etc. So they are definitely right wing but not the new 'Stormfront' variety. They can have quite progressive views. However, the Coalition as we call it of the Liberals and Nationals, is one of the main political forces in Aust.
The Greens are not as extremist as the US greens. Everything changes with ranked choice voting; sometimes the most unlikely house or senate candidate can end up elected because of preferences.

(205,377 posts)My dog has never been one for walks, though I've certainly tried. But he might feel differently if he had such a spectacular beach to walk and run!

(17,160 posts)Not liking walks. What's the story?
Rhiannon12866
(205,377 posts)Previously, I've had cocker spaniels and they enjoyed walks and running around. But Jack is a Brussels Griffon - at one point I had 2. They're supposed to be under 10 pounds and my other dog was, and when I tried taking him for a walk (he was 9 when I got him), my neighbor picked on me and said "that's not the sort of dog you're supposed to walk." He had Labs. But Jack is a much larger dog, 20+ pounds, but when I made the effort to walk him, he'd decide to sit down and I'd have to carry him home...
BTW, all my dogs, except for the cocker I grew up with, were rescue and I've previously adopted older dogs, but Jack was a pet shop rescue, so I've had him since he was 5 months old.

(17,160 posts)If a dog won't walk it's for a reason. The main one being pain or discomfort.
Second reason is fear. With enough patience you can maybe heal past hurt.
Persist, Rhiannon, he will appreciate it.

(205,377 posts)One issue that Jack has is that he's not thrilled with "weather." He's never enjoyed rain and we get a lot of snow here so he has to have a place cleared for him since he's on the small side. When he was a puppy, I tried boots, but they didn't fit and were more trouble than they were worth. Also, Jack just turned 16, so he's gotten somewhat set in his ways...

(17,160 posts)At 16 a dog is entitled to do whatever he feels like doing.
Normal dog laws dont apply after a certain age. A bit like humans.
As long as he is happy and warm nothing else matters.

(205,377 posts)He developed a skin condition during the initial part of the pandemic since he was unable to go to the groomer for his usual haircut, but that's much better now - and he does have issues with his left ear, it tends to get infected. But other than that, he's doing fine, so I consider us lucky. Two of my dogs have lived past 18, so I'm counting on Jack to still be with me for a long time.

(205,377 posts)She contacted me. He's another Brussels Griffon and you don't see too many of those. I've only seen one other in real life besides my two. And of course he was irresistible - though it had been a long time since I'd had a puppy! - so I adopted him and the rest is history. He was a pet shop dog who couldn't be sold because he had a health problem - it was a hernia which was repaired when he was neutered, and it certainly didn't slow him down, LOL. And of course now I don't know what I'd do without him...

(17,160 posts)The two girls, Gibby and the blonde poodle Phoebe are looking off to something on the far left. The pic below what they were looking at. Calm seas but a big swell meant some big waves breaking loudly on the rocks. That's what the girls were looking at. Rebus, the red poodle was looking straight at me. I'm his god.

Gibby looks so alpha! She was probably watching that wave to keep you safe.

(17,160 posts)Labor are slightly in front. I'm calling a Labor win - we are pretty predictable here. Not like the US. Why are our politics so calm and yours so violent?
